I just discovered (9 weeks pregnant) that my blue cross blue shield $350 month policy does NOT cover maternity. Now what? I will not be eligible for Medicaid Because if you've been insured for 6 months prior to applying, they turn you down. Do I cancel my current policy just so I can apply for Medicaid in 6 mos to help with hospitalization and delivery costs?

This is bullsmurf.

Why don't you qualify? We get a salary of 45k/year and qualify

I also found out that the government assisted programs (i.e. Medicaid and others) require that you're not insured up to 6 months before applying. I'll be giving birth in 6 months. Cannot afford to be without my blue cross policy protecting ME in the interim, plus you have to pay a deductible of up to $2000 with some of these government assisted insurance programs. I'm not eligible for Medicaid either as I've been insured, own my own business and earn a decent living. There's nothing for us, in the middle. The poor are covered, the rich can pay out of pocket. Nothing left for those in the middle, and uninsured moms-to-be seems to be a major epidemic!

I work a full time job and pay for insurance, I feel your pain, in a sense. My insurance is decent, but not the greatest, it only covers 20-40% of certain procedures.... I'm finding out now there's really no help for those of us that try to better our lives, work and pay into the system that rewards irresponsible choices. Having Medicaid/care [whichever it is] would help us tremendously... but since I "make too much" and have had insurance for 8 months, I'll be denied. Hell, I've been denied WIC because of my income, but everyone keeps telling me to keep applying and reapplying... It's frustrating.

Here in Ross co, they were very "understanding" and we were approved and reapproved for wic and Medicaid both.. I had united healthcare for several years and got approved for Medicaid as a secondary, then again with anthem after a ear with them.

I don't know about other states, but here in California there is a state subsidized program for medium-income pregnant women whose work doesn't offer insurance, isn't elidgible, or whose insurance doesn't cover pregnancy. It's a flat rate of about $400 for a year, and covers everything like medicaid would. Your community services agencies should be able to help you. And also, I heard that medi-cal covers prior recent bills if you are approved.

In Georgia I guess things are just a whole lot easier with Medicaid. When you apply for Medicaid everyone who applies for it gets Pregnant Women Medicaid unless you have insurance. (It doesn't matter how long you haven't had insurance as long as you can prove that you don't have it anymore). Also when you get Medicaid in Georgia you pick a health plan through Georgia families that cover other cost like Eye doctor visits, Dental visits & a Behavioral doctor visits. Also if you get Well Care like I have as my health plan they give you $15 credits at a time to pay for over the counter medications & supplies like Tylenol, bandages, vitamins, etc. I'm really surprised to hear how different Medicaid seems in different states. Medicaid even pays for your sons circumcision here. They pay everything. They usually only pay for 2 ultrasounds during pregnancy but they pay for unlimited ultrasounds if they are medically necessary. I'm only 12 weeks and I'm going for my 4th ultrasound Thursday due to medical problems. Now I'm curious as to why Medicaid is different in other places? Its government insurance. Shouldn't it all be the same? Unless not every pregnant woman gets Pregnant Women Medicaid.

Wow I can't imagine either...I live in Alberta where health care is truly free (regardless of your income, as in other provinces where you do have to pay). The biggest thing I have to worry about insurance for is prescriptions (3x Diclectin a day makes me really glad my work covers it) and a private room in the hospital. Hope everyone finds a solution and good health care, regardless of how you pay for it!
