re: Americans who need insurance for your pregnancy

posted 8th Apr '12
I guess in comparison to me you are all really lucky. I was forced to quit my job due to issues with my pregnancy and I'm only just at 6 weeks. I've applied for medicaid but I have to get my job to send in a wage form even though I don't work for them anymore and couldn't get insurance through them. Only problem is they have to go through corpoerate offices who have to do the paper work and I can't even get a hold of anyone, so right now I can't even get medicaid, plus there is a chance with me having quit my job instead of being fired that we won't even be allowed to have it...no including if they decide to take away my wic and food stamps since food stamps are affected by that.

If your state offers "High Risk Pool" insurance, it is the best way to go. I didn't want to go on Medicaid because most good OB's won't accept it and my employer does not offer insurance. I rummaged the internet looking for insurance, but, kept running into the "pre-existing" factor with insurance companies. Although it is illegal to state pregnancy as a "pre-existing condition" they still find loopholes. I was lucky and came across an attorneys website that mentioned going to my states insurance website and searching for "High Risk Pool Insurance". It is for anyone with a pre-existing condition that is denied coverage. Luckily, Pregnancy meets the criteria for qualifying. The only catch is that you cannot have/be covered by any other insurance carrier within the past 6 months. It is normal insurance, but, at a lower rate. Right now I am with Ohio Medical Mutual and my rate is 158.00 a month with a $1500 deductible. The only other negative aspect is that the states that do offer the High Risk Pool insurance have a cap amount. This means that, depending on how many people have applied, you could be put on a waiting list.

You need to call who ever is working your case there supervisor because in Texas we have to give the pregnancy Medicaid the day of the interview and wait on all the other paperwork give them 45days to turn it in

I think i'm gonna go up to their offices tomorrow because despite numerous phone calls to corperate office and leaving messages they still aren't returning my calls. My paper work has to be in by the 16th and they aren't cooperating which isn't helping. I had my first dr. appt a few days ago and its kinda scary because their paper work you sign says you have to pay them 30 days after your billed or they can sue you for the cost and on top of suing you for cost, can sue you for their court fee's too...(sigh) they sure don't make it very easy.

Arizona actually has awesome health insurance assistance when you're pregnant and then afterwards when you obviously have a child. Unless you're married, which I why I have to put that off! That part stinks.

Thank God in Wisconsin I had no problem with getting on medicaid. I found out I was pregnant, went to my Dr, and the same day I had temp. pregnancy insurance and didn't even leave the Dr. office. They have social workers that you take your pregnancy statement to, they automatically sign you up, then you come back the next day, and they fill out the paperwork for the permanant medicaid card. Plus I am on United Healthcare for my HMO which covers all prescriptions and even rides to the dr if needed.

My insurance sucks soooo bad, It is horrible I work at the local hospital (largest employer in town) and I have to vent that it is the worst insurance ever. I don't qualify for medicaid (I make 200 dollars more a month than allowed) I pay 600 dollars a month for family insurance. I went to my OB to confirm my pregnancy and have my yearly while I was there. I got a bill today for 140 dollars and I already paid my co-pay also. Then the vitamins they prescribed was 40 dollars a month, I called to see if they can change my prescription that one was 50 dollars. I call and they have no preferred vitamins. My Dr said he don't want me to take otc ones but right now I'm not taking any because I can't afford 40 dollars a month! I told him walmart has a prescription one for 3 months supply for 10 bucks! UGH this whole thing stresses me out to the max

Depending on the state you live in, and what kind of birth you have, you can easily go over 100,000 dollars for a pregnancy. My friend just had her's and her hospital bills are over 154,000 dollars.

Quoting Bliss025:" Well I have insurance but it doesn't cover maternity whatsoever..so what happens? can I still use it ... [snip!] ... I don't know if I'll just have to pay it myself or try to get CHIPS perinatal insurance cause I won't qualify for medicaid."

EVEN IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE YOU CAN STILL APPLY FOR MEDICAID.... Just want to point that out. I know a lot of my friends who have insurance and still applied for medicaid... especially in your case since your insurance doesn't cover pregnancy. Go to your local department of family and children services and APPLY!

I called about 20 insurance company's here in texas and they told me that me already being pregnant it was called a pre existing condition and that the insurance would not cover it or the baby. So i called medicaid and told them what was going on and they told me to do the paper work and send it in and they would help me out the best way they could. So i did it and i got on medicaid. I really do thank them so much for helping us.
