Tongue tied anyone..?

posted 4th Nov '08
Hey, just wondering if anyone else is tongue tied or if their little munchkins are..? Its when the little stringy bit under the tongue is extra long and restricts movement of the tongue...My three year old is tongue tied all the way to the tip of his and has alot of trouble pronouncing Ls and Rs and I want to know if anyone has had their's or their childrens snipped? Im thinking about getting it done for him before he goes to school in a couple of years because its obviously not supposed to be like that and its not as if its necessary to have the stringy bit that long the poor kid can't lick an ice cream or say his name properly (his name is Lachlan Lowes so he has alot of Ls to get around)

Just want to know of anyone who has had it done and if it has effected the kid/ person negatively at all, I dont want ppl telling me how bad of a person I am for wanting it fixed. If you think that then dont bother posting, but hey, public forum so whatever!

My niece had it. She was unable to breastfeed because of it, and she got it snipped when she was 2. We could tell a difference IMMEDIATELY. She was talking so much more than what she was before, she was pronouncing words correctly, there were no problems with it at all, and if it was painful, it didn't last long at all!

My son is tongue tied.

I really want to get it clipped but hubby wants to wait and see if he has trouble speaking first. I don't want to wait that long because if he learns how to talk one way and then we get it clipped, I don't want him to have to figure out how to talk all over again.

I've never heard of it.
But if your doctor suggests getting it fixed, I would do it.

It's kinda like being born with a cleft lip/palette....people have surgery to get them fixed on their child all the time.

My middle child had his snipped at 8 months of age. I didn't want it to cause him problems with his speech. It was over in like seconds but he had his done while he was under for a hydrocele repair in his testicle so he wasn't even awake. He had no problems with getting it done. He went home and kept eating like he normally would. My youngest (Mason) had to have his clipped too. They gave him a shot of numbing agent down there and it took like a minute to finish it. He was a little more crabby than his brother but thats only cause he was teething on top of everything else.
I say go for it. If its obviously giving him issues with speech he needs to have it fixed. After its done you wont even tell he had that problem.

Good luck.

I had alot of trouble trying to breastfeed aswell, it only lasted 6weeks because the poor little fella was starving! He would take forever to latch then lose suction all of the time! I have been told that it would be a good idea to have it done by a speech therapist (not because he was seeing one it just came up in general conversation) Im just having trouble with my family getting all narky about me getting it done....my poor little sister fell and bit a chunk out of her tongue when she was like 2 and it was still partially attached so the doctor just left it and told mum to get something done about it when she was older (she has a weird extra bubble of flesh on top of her tongue now) and she is 17this month and mum still hasn't had anything done about it!!!! I feel bad for her, she has been teased her whole life because of it! so yea, out of all of that mum is opposed to me having it done for him because she doesn't think I should be making decisions like that for him...umm yea just let him live with a speech impediment that is totally unnecessary until he is in his teens and can decide for himself that he wants to have a free tongue!!

I had issues with breastfeeding too though we lasted 3 months before anger and tears became too overwhelming. He had issues with bottles too. I'm glad I went ahead and had it done. I wouldn't change my mind over that for anything.

Yeah, my son had no trouble breastfeeding. He was exclusively breastfed up til 6 months and he's 14 months now and still breastfeeding. So his doctor doesn't seem too worried about it, but he also said that he's tongue tied pretty bad, so I'm torn.

IMO it's nothing but beneficial. If it were my child, i'd have it done. I don't want my child to suffer any more than what it normally would. ya know?

As far as your family... that's not their choice, and it sucks that they aren't supporting your decision if that is the one you make. Maybe just not tell them... and see if they notice a difference.

Lachy was only 5lb 3oz when he was born, left the hospital at under 5lb and at his 6week early childhood nurse check up, he had lost weight again and hadn't made up his birthweight still, and I would spend hours trying to get him latched again, I really was starving the poor little guy   its so disapointing being told that ur baby has lost weight and that you should bottle feed, i bawled all day but went straight out and bought some bottles and formula so I could get something into him. It mad me feel so bad about the whole breastfeeding thing. But I breastfed my second son till about 5-6months old so sthat was a bit better, I really want to breastfeed this bub for a bit longer. Its such a huge bonding experience.

This is exactly what happened to my sis. She felt terrible, and it was so sad to see how hard it was on her. She was able to breastfeed her 2nd as well, and had they known about the tongue they would have clipped it sooner.

I went to my doctor about three times trying to get a referral to get it snipped because I really wanted to breastfeed but he wouldn't give me one because they like to put them under for it here and he was too little. I dont understand why they have to put them under just to snip under their tongue, especially when they are that young, but anyway...! He will give me one now so I am going to make an appointment for next week for him ... I think that will take the appointment count up to three for dr. s next week lol ( I have my antenatal one day then Noah's 12month shots now one for Lachy! )

That's strange.. considering a lot of places don't even put the baby under to circumsize!!
Well hopefully you get the results you are hoping for!
