thumb sucking

posted 3rd Nov '08
my baby girl is 3 months old and she just started to suck her thumb. I think it looks cute but I know it's a hard habbit to break. Is this something that they do cause they are teething or is it a start of a bad habbit. what can and should i do about it?

at first its just a soothing thing but iff it isnt nip'ed in the bud soon. it could turn into a toddler, child bad habit.
i have cousins hitting 8 who still suck their thumb, its terrible.
my sons does it too. t drives me nuts!

I was always told if a child does something like sucking their thumb, don't try to break the habit, because it is just a phase and they will grow out of it. Have you tried giving her a pacifier instead? Sometimes it helps but if she is going to suck her thumb, she will do it no matter what.

I would offer a pacifier before I allowed thumb sucking.  The pacifier can be gently taken away where as the thumb cannot.

My baby started sucking her thumb at 2.5 months and coincidently started sleeping 12 hours through the night at the same time. Why? Because she learned to self-soothe, which is an important part of their development. So at this age, it's not a bad habit at all, but rather a learning milestone. I think they need somehting to help them soothe -- be it a thumb or a paci. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this age she's still so little.

If she's miserable without out, I'd try to give her the soother or just let her suck her thumb.

My second child sucked his thumb from day 1 and stopped himself by the time he was 4 years old. My third child was a very difficult baby; he initially took both the soother and his thumb, then refused the soother. Now he's 3.5 and he STILL sucks his thumb. We're trying to stop that, because the dentist has told us it's damaging his jaw & teeth, only because he does it a lot and very forcefully I guess. We put hot sauce on (tabasco) when we notice a lot of thumb sucking, as well as give him gum to chew at "prime" thumb sucking moments, like when he's watching his show on TV.

My daughter was sucking her thumb the day she was born, and I was really afraid of it being a hard habit to break. However, she stopped doing it all on her own by the time she was about 5 months old.

I give her a pacifier when i see her sucking her thumb but all she'll do is spit it out and continue with her thumb.

If she spits her paci out and sucks her thumb, I would let her do it. More than likely, she will grow out of it before too long. I would give her teethers like someone else suggested and try to get her to suck or chew on other things..but in all honesty, like someone else said it is good for them to self-soothe and not letting them learn to do that or do what makes them feel "safe" or "comfortable" I have heard does more harm than good...but everyone has their own opinion

mine too.
see what i was thinking ( i still dont know if i could do this)
but i was thinking let it be then wait and see if he fades out of the habit, and if he doesnt. use what people use on their nails to stop chewing them ( that gross tasting stuff you put on your nails) or even hot sauce or lemon juice or something if he doesnt fad out of it in toddler years. for right now, i let him be.

Agreed. I think at this age, they need it but if it continues into toddler where it interferes with them talking etc like some do then it's not ok...but regardless we all grow out of it sometime.

sometimes i find my self pulling his thumb out of his mouth but only because some times hes trying jabber at us but with his thumb in his mouth and thats not ok just because he wont learn to speak clearly etc if he has soemthing in his mouth and i pull it out of his mouth if we're playing or something because at times like that its truely not nessicary (sp) to be sucking his thumb
