Umbilical Cord...Oder?!

Alexia is 12 days old and her umbilical cord was doing just fine till last night, it seems to be alot looser and now it has a weird oder to it? Is this normal? I clean it everyday, but it smells weird, i need help =(

the smell is probably the dead part that will fall off. Keep cleaning it well and im sure it will fall off soon.

I was told to leave it alone, that it falls off quicker when it is just left alone.

Keep it clean by dabbing it with rubbingalcahol, it prevents infection and makes it dry out faster. Call you pedi about the odor just in case, because an odor can mean infection.   Better to be safe than sorry.

It took a while for my son's to fall off. The doctor was upset that we weren't really cleaning it the way it needed to be cleaned. The end result was a severe infection that began with an odor. All I can tell you to do that we initally did not do was to go DEEP into where all the yellow stuff (puss) is located. When you do you can kinda wiggle the cord without hurting them. The doc said that the objective is to get rid of the blood and YELLOW stuff. When it's cleaned right it will not smell and it will dry up faster hence why you use alcohol. I hope this helps.
