am i being a bitch? flu shot ??

posted 13th Oct
My step daughter goes to day care full time...Shes been in day care since she was 4 weeks old, and she had the flu at 9 weeks, countless runny noses, ear aches, coughs etc....

my husband and I are having a baby any day, and today I was asking him if him and her mother decided on getting her a flu shot (shes old enough, healthy enough etc) he said " no her mom thinks it will cause autism"....so i told him "well, if thats the case then, I dont think she should be around the new baby, since he cannot get a flu shot and the flu is already here were we live..." this started a huge argument, he thinks I'm being mean but really, I dont want my new born exposed to the flu...muchless all her other germs that shes used to and he isnt...I'm guessing he doenst remember how scary it was for his 9 wk old to be in the er with a 103 fever, and I'm guessing he doesnt recall that the flu can be fatal in new borns?

Honestly, who wouldnt get a flu shot, they are recommened and children have priority at our drs office....

I don't think I'm over-reacting in the least bit...but I am looking for some prespective.... I got the flu shot myself...and so did my husband, but I dont understand why he wouldnt want to protect his children (her from being sick and our son from being sick?)

I don't get the flu shot and neither do my kids. They've never had the flu so I don't see it as necessary.

welll the flu shot is not even remotely linked to Austism...so that excuse is no good The only vaccine linked is MMR. I personally don't plan on giving my son flu shot...and I have never had one myself, but if you think it is best, you should keep trying to convince your SO.

they might ask if your baby an have an rsv shot. plus if you have the flu shot and breastfeed she would be covered. when I had nathan is january he was given an rsv shot cause he was to little for a flu shot

I would be upset just because it is the start of flu season and kids carry every germ out there. It is awful that all immunization have let to everyone thinking they casue autism. I got the flu shot and so did my kids it is not a choice in my house. Good Luck.

I don't think your being a bitch at all, I would want the same thing. I have advised my whole family that we will be getting flu shots this year b/c my son is only 5 weeks and even though no one in my house goes to daycare the pedi said to do it to be safe. My husband had the flu last year and had to be hospitalized..we are not gonna do that again.

i don't think you're being over protective at all. I dont even let preschool age and up kids near my baby because i consider them all to be germ-encrusted.

lol, i didn't like kids before i had my baby and now that my baby is here, i still don't like other kids. i love my baby, he's wicked awesome. other kids... i'm suspicious of them.

Also to add since you got a flu shot your baby will be covered for 6 months of its life with the shot you got. Just thought I would let you know.

hmm....it just pisses me off that her own mother wouldnt want to give her a flu shot....knowing shes in daycare 12 hours a day...and knowing the risk it carries for newborns to even be exposed to it....

I've never had a flu shot, same with my husband. Neither one of us plan on getting a flu shot, and my son won't get his tomorrow when he goes to the doctor either. And like another said, the only vaccine related to autism is the MMR, which my son won't receive tomorrow either. He will get all of his other shots, though.

Well since you already got it the baby should be fully immunized on arrival for around 6 months. That being said I would highly recommend she get one for her safety. It is in no way linked to autism as the American Academy of Pediatrics now enforces that all shots given to children are thimerosal free. I totally agree with you, in not letting her hold/touch the baby if she doesn't get it. Little kids really don't understand the concept of hand hygiene and even if you wash her hands she could cough/sneeze on the baby.

Oh and to the OP there is no way to get the flu from the flu shot.

EDITED TO ADD: Working in healthcare I get the flu shot every year and even though I am around people with the flu almost daily I have never gotten it. The flu shot does not protect against all strains of the flu just the ones predicted to be most prevelent/virulent that year, but imo it still reduces the risk.
