Spotting at 5 weeks. Miscarriage?
posted 13th Oct
I'm 36 and in my first pregnancy. I'm considered "high risk" because of my age, so I'm very worried about every symptom.
I'm 6 weeks, and have had really lightnausea (goes away easily when I eat a snack), my breasts have been a little sore (but not too bad...I just notice it when I take off my bra at night), and I've had very mild PMS-like cramps for the last couple weeks -- off and on.
On Wednesday last week, my husband & I had intercourse. The next morning, I had red blood on the tissue when I went to the bathroom. I put on a pad, but very, very little ever wound up there. It was mostly just there when I put tissie paper there to see. It was very light, but it did have tiny bits of tissue in it sometimes. It stopped altogether by lunch time that day, and it hasn't returned. I did not have any cramping accompanied by this bleeding.
I went to the doctor and they took blood to test for HCG levels. It was about 3500 (at 5 weeks). I went in again today for more blood work, and they'll know in two days what the level is today, and if I'm progressing normally.
My doctor didn't feel alarmed and said it might well be because of the intercourse. Apparently the cervix is very sensitive during pregnancy and can easily be irritated.
I'm sooooo scared that I'm miscarrying and know that I can't know until the bloodwork comes back. But if anyone else has had similar experiences, it sure would make me feel better.

I spot after sex too it probably is not an issue but I understand your concern

Light bleeding after sex when pregnant is very normal. If you're not having any bad cramps or anymore blood im sure that was probably just it. Good luck & i hope everyhing turns out fine! Oh and welcome to BG and Congrats on the pregnancy!

I haven't had a similar experience, but it does sound like its completely normal and everything is just fine! Try not to worry!

id try to relax if i were you, walking around on eggshells is tough on you and the baby....its normal to spot after intercourse, especially if there was deep penetration!

BTDT! If it was just once, and it wasn't enough blood to soak through a pad, it's nothing to worry about. I cried my eyeballs out the first time I spotted when I was about 2 months pregnant. You're fine, hon.

I have spotted like that with every single one of my children. I think it is very normal. I even had spotting with severe cramping with this pregnancy, but it cleared up and I had an ultrasound and everything was fine.
I feel you on the high risk thing though, I'm 29, but carrying twins who share a placenta, and the extra risk is worrying me like mad.

Oh and I forgot one thing...About the blood work.
We had a blighted ovum for our first pregnancy, so for our second pregnancy, before we saw a heart beat, we had serial HCG test's done. Our doc called us and told us it didn't look good because the levels weren't doing what they were supposed to. Then I started spotting and came in at7 weeks for an ultra sound, and there was a heart beat. He told me that sometimes the HCG doesn't do what they think it should, but once you see a heartbeat your risk of miscarriage drops to 5 percent!

Same here. I also spot afterthe couple of pelvic exams I have and once after a tough BM. All in all I've prbably spotted about 8 times and I'm only at 23 weeks. Everytime I was very nervous and anxious so thats normal. My doc sid to not be alarmed unless it is accompanied by cramping or is dark red.....or more then spotting. Some of us just have a sensitive cervix!

Hi. I'm 42 and finally pg! I understand being nervous though. Light spotting in your first trimester is not cause for alarm. Also, lots of women have spotting after sex. No need to worry... but you will likely worry about everything anyway. Just try to relax. Congratulations.

Thanks to everyone who responded; it's really sweet to take time out of your day to try to make a stranger feel better! My doctor called today and my HCG went up from 3200 to 19000 in four days, so she says there's nothing to worry about. Whew! Very good news.

I went in for an ultrasound yesterday. They saw the gestational sac and the yolk sac, but no heartbeat yet. The tech and doctor both say it's probably just too early, and I go back in a week for a second ultrasound. According to my LMP, I was6 weeks 1 day. But according to an ovulation predictor, I didn't ovulate until 17 days after my LMP. So I was probably only 5 weeks 5 days at the ultrasound. I'm hopeful that they're right -- it's just too early. I guess we'll know more when I go back next week.
