Pumping Milk

posted 13th Oct
Ok so I had my LO at 31 weeks and they didn't feel him ready to take my milk yet till he was 32 weeks. So I had started pumping the day he was born thinking my milk wouldn't come in, but it did and lots of it! I'm only able to pump and can't breast feed yet, but when I do I'm concerned since I pump 2 oz each side, that it's gonna be too much for him since now he's only taking 36 cc's! Also I've tried pumping every 4 to 5 hrs instead of 2 to 3 and 10 min or less, but still produce so much and if I stop or go longer I know I'll get engorged or possibly get mastitis! Plus my freezer and the NICU's freezer is packed with my milk! Has anyone ran into this?

An over supply problem? You could just pump and dump.

My milk never came in but a friend I made in NICU had this problem. Have you considered donating extra milk?? How about asking friends and relatives to store extra??

I was thinking the same thing about donating it...I'll check with my NICU...

LOL yeah I know many mothers who would love to have such a supply of milk...I remember the whole pump and dump deal with my last kiddo...but only did that when I drank some wine or beer...I just might dump it if my NICU doesn't take donations...

Don't donate it until you know you aren't going to need it..
I considered donation too .. Until my daughter came home and I used alot of what i had frozen!!

Yeah my whole freezer is full! We don't buy any frozen foods anymore and as for meat we get it the day we plan on cooking it since there's no room.
I hope my LO comes home soon. They say maybe in 2 or 3 weeks...I just dumped like 60+ bottles of 2 oz's at the NICU for him so I hope they up his feedings too, that might help.

I had my freezer, my grama's and my aunt's full before I bought a deep freezer..

WOW! I don't have much family that might be able to help like that or that I can really trust to hold the milk for me. I think I might get my mom and MIL to help, they got big freezers!

That's a great idea..
You can always put it in plastic grocery bags and label it so then no one takes it out thinking it's something else..

Freeze it! You will need it later for sure! My daughter is five and a half pounds and drinking 4-5 ounces a feeding! I had stopped pumping because of medicines I had to go on, and I ran out much sooner than I expected and have to give her formula now!
