My 3 week old is breathing hard...?? Help!

posted 12th Oct '08
My son is 3 weeks old tomorrow and he breathes really hard and fast. He can just be sitting there and you can see his belly going up and down really fast...I was wondering if that is normal? I have tried searching online but all I found is breathing problems right after birth (which they never said anything) If its serious I wanted to go to the Emergency Room as soon as possible, but if its normal I just want something to keep me from worrying. This is my first baby and I dont know what to expect...

If anyone smokes they do it outside...we have a weiny dog, but keep him away from him...and he has done it for a while...and i dont think its weezing..just fast breathing.

my son breaths hard as well. if his breathing is labored then you should take him to the hospital. i think its normal for them to breath hard because they are so little. milk comes out of my son's nose so because they don't know how to breath thru their mouths yet he struggles to catch his breath. but suppose to be normal too. my daughter had the same issue in the begininng where the milk would come out her nose.

Aww, well milk doesn't come out of his nose he is just breathing hard.. Everyone that has seen him has asked is everything okay because he is breathing so hard..Ever so often his breathing will be normal though and slow down a bit, but its usually fast. I hope its normal.

I think that maybe you should try to be a clean as possible (not saying that you are not) around the baby jsut to see if it goes away. Try to keep the dander away from the baby, an air filter to clean the air. Like don't vaccume around the baby so dust particles are not up in the air. Maybe Smoking with a jacket on and take it off so the smoke is not on clothing when you hold him.
My son has asthma-I didn't do anything to provoke it it jsut happened. I think that it may be normal breathing pattern if he is not weezing.
I even have to have windows shut if the lawn gets mowed just because of all the particles that may come in the house.
Maybe trying what I suggested for a bit-but I don't think it is asthma or anything-I am not a doc, just a mom with an asthmatic kid.
But also bring it up to his ped.

i'm looking at my son now and he's breathing hard and he's sleeping. doesn't that sound so nice, i'm looking at him now!!!! anyway, when my duaghter had breathing problems the doc said to look at her chest not stomach, if it goes in deep he's struggling.

I try to be clean....I know we do have fleas bad but i dont think that could be the cause? My grandmother wont do anything drastic ti get them to go away and we have tried fogging..nothing works, but i will try all that

That is true. You know if their breathing is a problem if their chest kind of caves in at the ribs when they take a breath. That means they are struggling.

Personally, if you think it's not normal (and you must have some kind of warning bell going off to have noticed it and asked on here), then I would take him to the doctor regardless. If it turns out to be ok, good! But I'd hate for you to wait and it actually be a problem.

How long ago did you last fog? That could be a definite irritant to a small child's lungs.

Oh its been months ago. The only reason I know its terribly bad is even though we give our dog a bath in flea shampoo and spray him, he will be COVERED by the next day and i mean completely covered. he has tons of fleas just everywhere. I am not a dirty person and we do not live in filth..its just a flea problem.

Fast, labored breathing: Fluid in the smallest airways (the "alveoli") causes pneumonia, an infection due to a virus or bacteria. Pneumonia causes fast, labored breathing, occasionally cyanosis, a persistent cough, and crackly sounds ("rales") when listened to with a stethoscope.

I found this on a website....he does cough...Im worried now..
