posted 10th Oct '08
is there a possibility you can go paralized from the epidural
i want one , but just the thought of having something go into my spine,
(the bone that makes me be able to move) just freaks me out a bit
and plus a girl told me that theres possibilitys to go paralized

you have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting paralyzed from the epi.

That was my biggest fear but i ended up getting it anyway cuz i couldnt take the pain anymore. I dont regret getting it at all. I was able to sleep after it took effect and i was relaxed enough to allow my cervix to dilate further.

I was afraid too. When I got mine it hurt less than my contractions. I rather get that done a million times then have those damn contractions. I felt a little prick but after that nothing. he was done in no time.

That is so rare. Think about how many they do every day. They do know what they are doing. Trust me, when you are in that last bit of labor, being paralized dosn't seem that bad. LOL
Get the eppi!!!!!! I didn't and oh god how I wish I did!

Its possible but rarely happens. There are other side effects though.

Yes there is a slight chance of it....however I had one w/o and Epi, and my youngest with an epi. I would rather go thru my youngest's labor and delivery 100 times over before I would have my oldest son again. I actually got to enjoy my delivery of my youngest son.

Head ache, but nothing else major. And they can give you pain meds for a spinal head ache.

Its rare but it can happen.
I think we all should go into labor with an open mind, whatever happens happens.
With my first i was agained an epi and i had one with my 2nd i was all for an epi and i didnt need one.
This time who knows..

But when your in so much pain that you want the epi you dont really care what happens during the procedure

It's rare. But there are a lot of things that it can cause. Some people have back problems from it and headaches and stuff. And it can affect your child too. But it is your choice on what you want. I personally am choosing to not get one.

Very unlikely, but you can have back pain, migraines, fever, vomiting and some peoples legs do not come back for a long period of time. I had sharp pains in my back for at least a year after mine and my legs were numb for 6 hours, your legs are supposed to come back in 10 minutes. I also had a 103 fever and threw up 3 times.

There are a lot of other things that can happen. Anything for the headaches to numbness that can come and go years after getting the epidural, hypotension. Even convulsions. Which aren't likely but happen more often than being paralyzed.

I've heard of the epidural causing long term back aches...... but even thats rare.

Plus it doesnt go into your spine.... It goes in between..... but I won't lie..... All this crosses my mind too.

It goes in to your spinal cord which is your spine, not the bone part but the cord is what moves the bones.

I had the epi with both kids and I plan on having it this time too! Sure it is possible to be paralized, but there's also a chance it can make your labor the best labor you ever dreamed of. My second delivery was a dream! My epi was so good I sat through all of the pressure and the contractions and didn't feel a thing! When the dr came in to check me I was 10 and my little man was right there, 2 pushes and he was out! I had an amazing labor that I will cherish forever, I wasn't exausted afterward! I was relaxed and able to enjoy my baby!
