Drugs

posted 6th Oct '08
I see a lot of people talking about how they've never used drugs. I just want people to stop and realize that they need to be more clear with their words, because just about everyone has and does use various drugs on a regular basis.

Main Entry:1drug
Pronunciation: \ˈdrəg\ Function:noun Etymology:Middle English droggeDate:14th century
1 aobsolete : a substance used in dyeing or chemical operations b: a substance used as a medication or in the preparation of medication caccording to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (1): a substance recognized in an official pharmacopoeia or formulary (2): a substance intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease (3): a substance other than food intended to affect the structure or function of the body (4): a substance intended for use as a component of a medicine but not a device or a component, part, or accessory of a device
2: a commodity that is not salable or for which there is no demand —used in the phrase drug on the market
3: something and often an illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness

Now, when people say drug they almost always mean illegal drug - but as you can see by the definition, a substance does not have to be illegal to be a drug.

Aside from the pharmaceutical class of drugs (which is everything from tylenol to benadryl to phenergran to vicodin), there are many legal drugs that cause addiction, habituation or a marked change in consciousness.

Most people have taken a pharmaceutical at least once in their life, and many do on a semi regular basis.

Those rare people who have never had one in their entire life for any reason (amazingly healthy those people are, I guess) have probably had other drugs at least once.

Tobacco, is a drug. Alcohol, is a drug. Caffeine, is a drug. Refined sugar, is a drug.

Call it semantics, but if you're going to blast people for using drugs, make sure that you're specifying the illegal variety - if you don't, you're blasting yourself at the same time.

It does because most of the people who say these things are so self-righteous about the fact that they "don't do drugs" but they are putting things in their bodies that are just as harmful if not more harmful than some of the things they are so against.

Speaking of drugs. Is Motrin (600mg) safe to take in early pregnancy? I was in a car wreck (my car was totaled...hit by a drunk driver) on Friday and they gave me a 600mg dose of Motrin for the pain. I didn't think anything of it then, but there's a chance I could be prego. But if I were, I would've been in week 1 then. I didn't take any more after that one even though they prescribed it and told me to take it. I was too worried that it might be bad. Any thoughts?

I've read that you should only take tylenol (or other brands of acetaminophen) during pregnancy, so I wouldn't continue to take motrin as it's ibuprofen, but the usage you've described is not likely to cause any harm, in my opinion.

I understand but when someone gets on their high horse and says something that is putting others down than why not call the person out for it right there? We all know what people are talking about when they say " I don't do drugs", no need to clarify it really.

Why should people communicate clearly?

Is this what you're asking here?

I think my question answers itself.
