Hmmm, what is this thing?

Ok... so I know Ava is a little young yet, but after her first birthday, I feel as though we will be fast approaching that awkward phase in every parent's life... the day their child discovers they have a penis/vagina/both So, would anyone like to share their experiences with how they reacted? I don't want to teach my child that it is bad to explore their body, but I also want them to know that that is a private thing... how did everyone go about teaching their children their beliefs on that matter, and what are you beliefs?

I would be honest about what it is and not make up names for it. Between the ages of 1-4 you may not have to explain too much about it. But if she asks specific questions honesty is always the best policy.

get some books!! i cant remember the names or authors, but i took a childrens literature class and there were some really great ones! its always easier to have it laid out in front of you. and they have them for different age groups.
just make sure you read through them before reading them with your child!! sometimes the authors dont think the same as you! lol
but you def dont want to give any false info or too little of info. or too much. lol.
there is a fine line, and you want to be the one they go to for those answers!

I'm kind of in the same spot you are Anna so I don't really have any tried and true advice, but at this age I'm not so worried about it. Feyana has her fun in the bath and sometimes while diaper changing. The diaper changing thing is really annoying and I discourage that, but I say have at it in the bath.
At 1 years old there is no concept of privacy, but as soon as Feyana starts showing signs of understanding privacy I plan on explaining that playing with the fun bits is a private thing. That's assuming she's stil playing with them publicly.
I also plan on calling her fun bits by their real name, but it's much more amusing to type fun bits than vagina.

Max has been yanking on his penis since he was about 6 months old. He pokes at it through his diaper now whenever he gets a lttle stiffy. I always tell him to wait until bathtime, but he ignores me.

I love this topic!

Cadence is a bit older (21 months), I tell her to keep her hands out of her diaper, but let her do whatever she likes in the tub. I also discourage her from getting her hands involved during diaper changing, however, lately, if she's only wet, I've been giving her a wipe to help wipe herself.
That's all I got dude!

My son loves his junk. I pull his hands away because he likes to pull on it and flick it around, whenever he is getting changed or taking a bath. If it's out he's grabbing it. When he understands waht he is doing, I will explain to him, that that's private!

My son totally loves his junk, especially in the tub because it sort of bobs around. Anyway, we do "potty" time every night, where he basically just sits on the potty to get used to it. I explain to him then that it's called his penis and that's where the potty comes from, so at least he knows it has a function (other than becoming erect, which is does pretty frequently...grrr) So yeah, that's all I've got. haha
