Advice on declawing a cat!

posted 6th Oct
I've been having issues with my cat for awhile now with him clawing furniture and tearing up my sheets on my bed and it's bugged me but I left it alone. Well now I'm watching a little girl during the day and after he went over and just scratched her for no reason I've decided to get him declawed.

I just wanted to ask those that did get it done how it went afterwards. Was your cat in a lot of pain? I'm getting it done with a laser, which I was told cuts down on recovery time and the pain, but I still worry about my baby. Do they give you pain meds for him afterwards? Are they able to walk around? Does anything need to be done different after the surgery? I'm sure my vet will fill me in on all this but I wanted to ask those that have done it. Thanks in advance!

Declaw the front only in case he gets out side, he will still have hisback to defend himself... JMO, and declawing a cat is not mean... they don't feel a thing.....

vets say its equivalent to cutting off the first joint of our finger.
you can buy caps to put over their nails or bitter apple spray to keep them from scratching furniture. personally, i think its inhumane. i also have two cats and one of them loves to scratch my furniture...it fucking sucks, but i need to try the other options first.

I've had him 3 years and he's never gotten outside. I thought about leaving the back alone but I just didn't know if I should or shouldn't. he's kinda helpless anyway, I'm not sure if he knows how to fight

There was a girl on her talking about claw covers? I wouldn't declaw. My cat Bandit that I had since I was 11 passed away because he got outside and couldn't defend himself when german shepards where chasing him.

ETA: We only declawed his front paws, so he couldn't do much w/ his back claws to defend himself.

I am against declawing but I can say that alot ofvets do not pull the claws out anymore, they laser them off so it's less painful to the animal....

Atleast that's what I observed while working ata ER animal clinic!

I had my cat declawed. He suffered a bad reaction to the glue they use to "plug" the hole where the nail comes out of (only happens to 1% of cats). He spent a week in the vets clinic. My clinic was really good about it, because it wasn't under normal circumstances they paid for his medication and half the boarding fee. I was on the hook for half the rooming/boarding fee which I thought was more than fair!

If you do get the procedure done please please please make sure to keep him as an indoor cat. He won't be able to defend himself if another kitty decides to pick a fight !!!

I tried the claw covers and they didn't work. I tried the spray and my moron cat loves the stuff. I got him a cat post and all he does is lay on it.

I know that there's difference of opinion on declawing and I used to be the one that argued saying it was inhumane, so I won't get mad at you for posting about it. But my opinion has changed drastically, and I just want advice from those that have already gotten it done.
