Small birth canal?

posted 6th Oct
Has anyone been told they have a small birth canal? My mom said she was told this and she had long painfull deliveries. I don't want the same thing. Curious if anyone has this and what is their birth story.

i don't know if it's the same thing, but my doctor told me I had a narrow birth canal. My hips wouldn't spread enough for him to fully drop down, so I ended up having a c-section after 23 hours of labor.

I do. I was in labor for 24 hours with no progression. My water broke but my daughter never engaged the way she should have. My doctor said he should have been able to push on her head with resistance. Whenever he checked me she would move up farther. I had a C-section as well.

I didnt even push. My doctor checked me before they were going to induce me and told me that. He said that he was more than sure I'd end up having to have a c-section so they went ahead and scheduled me for one.

I was told that with my first baby, and had no problems at all. I had a 7 hour labor and pushed for all of 20 minutes

I don't think they even know till you're in labor.

Your birth canal is really not the issue with long and slow deliveries... It all depends how fast yourcervix dilates and how easily your baby can navigate its way through your pelvic bones. Your vagina is only about four-five inches long from your cervix to the outside, and by the time your cervix is fully dilated, the back of itis already stretched to the size of the baby's head, which shortens that distance considerably! It only takes a few pushes to get the baby's head past those few inches and then he is crowning!
Tearing is probably the only concern if you really have a tiny birth canal, but those tissues were designed to stretch and with proper care during the pushing stage you can usually avoid tearing, or just need a stitch or two. Its pretty normal for first time moms to push between one and two hours, but your contractions slow way down during pushing so you might have up to five minutes between them! (so really its not that many pushing contractions compared to labor contractions) That is good because the slower baby's head comes through that passage, the longer those tissues have to fan out and stretch.
Anyways, I said all that to say no matter the "size" of your birth canal when its not delivering a baby, your body is able to adjust for the size of your baby. (think about a guy's penis... the size when its small has really nothing to do with the size it ends up being when its big! In fact, sometimes the tiny penis's are the ones that grow the largest! haha)
Think about those tiny asian women who look like they are about 13 years old who give birth to 8 pound babies with no problem!   I'm sure you'll do great!

Unless he was talking about your pelvic outlet, meaning your hip bones.... in which case depending on the size of your baby it could be an issue...?
But generally the words "birth canal" is referring to your vagina.
