Can babies have asthama?

posted 6th Oct
And if so, how do they treat it? I *think* I had asthama that young, but I am not certain exactly what my mom said, lol.

My daughters cough is awful, and shes been coughing since birth, and now with a cold, its gotten worse.

Yes they can. My daughter was diagnosed with it around 4-6months. I have to do breathing treatments with her. She has 2 different types of medicines that go in the machine. One is to do every day and the other when it gets bad and the dr gave me claritan for when she is bad. Her breathing machine meds are abuteral(as needed one) and pulmicort(everyday)

And yes, they can. I had it from 2 months til I was a teenager. I still have it, it just isn't as bad as it once was.

some places they can test infants for asthma.
here in saskatchewan, they won't test you until the age of two.

aeson had a really bad cough like that too, and my doc said that's how asthma shows it self in babies
so he was prescribed inhalers.
it might be an allergy though. since we moved out of our basement, which had a mold problem he hasn't needed his inhalers at all.

Thanks Everybody!   We go to the Dr's today for a checkup so I am going to make sure he checks her throughly in the lung department.

I've had asthma since I was born... I had my first asthma attack in the hospital the day I was born. My son shows all the signs of having it, but my doctor told me that they will not diagnose him until he's two years old, or when he has his first asthma attack, whichever comes first. He coughs in his sleep 2-3 times a night (like a coughing fit), and of course it scares the shit outta me. I have an emergency diaper bag packed incase anything happens.   It sucks. But good luck and keep me updated on what they say!

My son was diagnosis at age 4 months. We do the same as above. The only different is Clarinex was not strong enough so we are using Xycal(sp).

LOL... darling you could have called me for that one. you know i have asthma. i doubt she has asthma. its hard to tell if she has a cold anyways. however she can still have a nebulizer with medicine to treat her little cough. the best time to catch asthma is when shes asleep and not sick. put your head close to her chest. if you hear any weezing. tell the doc and he will make the decision from there.
im afraid to say docs are diagnosing asthma in people who dont even have it. (my fave is an over weight person who has trouble breathing while walking up stairs) some of my friends have been told they have asthma. lol. when they are just out of shape. (not that its relevant to lilly)
either way. whatd the doc say? how did her appt go? i think she just has an aweful cold. =( poor little lilly pad. kiss her for me.
and call me tomorrow. im meeting with the high risk specialist at 2:30. hope everythings alright. theyre going to do another ultrasound to check everything in abbey. =/
love you
