A realization about public breastfeeding

posted 4th Oct

Today was the first time I've breastfed in public. Man, what a hassle! My little boy is only 9 days old and we're still working out breastfeeding procedure. I discovered that you really can't do the 'football' hold in a parked PT Cruiser. There just isn't any room. So I attempted to pull off the cross-cradle hold. SCORE! He latched right on, correctly, and I was thrilled. But then I'm trying to struggle with a stupid blanket. I was always one of those girls who said they'd *never* breastfeed in public without a blanket. HA!! Now that I know how difficult using a blanket is, I'd rather just whip it out and do it au natural.

I'm sitting in my car, using my teeth and shrugging my shoulder helplessly trying to keep that blanket up. maybe i'm just not very coordinated, I don't know. Jeez. It's enough to keep a girl at home.

That's how I felt when I nursed. I knew some other moms who were so graceful about it so early on- and I wa SO jealous. I nursed my twins for 8 weeks and never was graceful. I rarely went out with them- and when I did I just didn't care who saw me after awhile- It was impossible for me to keep completely covered.

With the blanket just wrap it around the part of the boob that's exposed (in my case that's a lot) haha I don't even cover her head. Congrats! It gets easier and you'll care less and less!

Good for you!!

I always laugh at soon to be moms that say they're never going to do something, but when that baby comes, a lot of the time you change position!

There are special covers you can get that tie around your neck called privacy blankets or something. I also always just tied a corner of the receiving blanket around my bra strap and that did okay but its hard to see the baby and I have very large tatas so I had to make sure he was on properly. Lol

I've given up on the blanket! I never got the hang of it and the older Emery got the more she started fighting with it. I just try and be as discreet as I can be without the blanket, and let me tell you, we draw a lot less attention for it.

And, I never used a blanket in the car. If they are looking in my windows they can see whatever there is to see.

that's the thing... i really don't give a crap who sees me breastfeeding my boy. to be honest, i'd rather someone see some of my breast than see me munching on a receiving blanket in an attempt at keeping covered for the sake of 'decency'.

That's exactly why I ditched the blanket!

ohh i know how difficult it can be with the blanket!!! i thought it was bad when he was under a month old, hes almost 4 months now and his arms, legs, and head just move everywhere!! i gave up on it lol..i just usually wear a tank top under whatever shirt i wear and when i need to feed him i just pull my shirt up, my tank and bra down and thats it, sometimes i still put a blanket over him...

Major props to you for breastfeeding mama! Now, the good news is, it gets easier. I promise. Pretty soon you will be able to feed that baby anywhere, anytime, with or without a blanket and no one will even notice.
If you're in your car, I wouldn't worry much about the blanket unless you're really shy. That's your space, you know? If people don't like it then they should stop looking in your car!
