handmade slings/blankets!

posted 3rd Oct
I make slings and blankets -......the style of sling is called a mei tai and it can be used for newborns up to toddlers...i have friends that carry their 2 year old on their back with it.....I have photos below of a sample sling/how to use it and a sample blanket that I have made for a BG member.....prices are VERY reasonable, even considering that you get custom work in a fabric you like....not settling for whatever you find in store/on line......$45 for slings, $20 for stroller/receiving blankets, $40 for smaller crib blankets, $75 for large crib blankets.....and I can make a pocket for the sling and i embellish the blankets with the babies name or I can print on it, embroider, etc...

Ive seen variations f them, I have borrowed a "ring sling from my cousin for a few days, but found the ring dug the crap out of my shoulder, so I bought from ebay an organic one piece sling that's ok, I just thought when I ordered it fr my size it would fit for my son and I but when I first got it he was comfortable in it, but now,he gets so pissed.. you're slings look a lot more comfy ..

the reason why i like the mei tai, besides being able to do it in awesome fabrics, is that it distributes the weight evenly across your shoulders/back.....i have heard nothing but good reviews about them.....and you can use them from newborn all the way up to toddler.....my friend has a 2 year old and she puts him on her back in it

I might be, the only thing I'm a stickler on is using an Organic cotton, but I'm having trouble find fabrics that are so pretty, and not just solid greens, or browns..

it is really hard to find organic cottons in prints because they normally use plants to dye them......i love cotton, but i do have a hate/love relationship with it b/c it does rape the land and make it hard to grow anything else afterwards...and then i have the same feeling about bamboo.....it grows fast and is great as a renewable fiber, but taking it from the plant to fabric is VERY toxic......it doesn't matter which way i choose, i get screwed!..hhhaah.....i had been using wool from my mother's friend's farm...and she spins it herself and then i hand dye it with different plants....but that is only for crocheting...if you don't mind color, i could just get organic cotton and then dye it any color you wish with plant fibers.....sorry i am just rambling.....OH!...and i only use fabrics that are made in the u.s.a....and in my blankets, the batting inside is made of recycled plastic bottles..its awesome!

Jeez ya hippie LOL
Thats awesome that you use supplies that are all around you, I never imagined using a filler of recycled plastic bottles LOL
As for crocheting, I'm working on learning how too, my mom does, but she's a leftie, while I'm all righty...
I'll have a serious talk to my hubbie when he comes home about this, I would LOVE to have a mei tai sling! We could work out pricing, or whatever, and I'll throw the idea at him.. be like.. OUr wedding anniversary is coming up next month.. gimme XD

hehe...im actually NOT a hippie...but i am..hahahah....yeah, the only thing i really care about is if something is made in the u.s.a. and i try to get fabrics from small companies and buy yarns from farms i know......just let me know what he says!......depending on fabric, i charge about $45 for a sling.....if you want specially dyed fabric or you choose more expensive fabric, then it'll go up......i'll be around!
