Birthing Plan

posted 2nd Oct
I was wondering if I can see other peoples birthing plans. I feel like I don't really have one. I want to go natural. But I still want to have the epidural there as an option. I do want anything to help me dialate if need be. I also want my mother with me at all times.

Can anyone give me some examples of their birthing plan cause this is my first child, and I have no idea what all needs to be on it.

My birth plan was this:
I would like to do it as naturally as possible but if there is a problem I want that baby out A.S.A.P. They couldn't even follow that. I personally don't think it was too complicated of directions.

Dear Dr. Bean and Mt. Carmel Staff

Please regard this as my official plan regarding the labor and delivery of my child. If there is anything that requires further discussion please let me know.

Sincerely,
Ashley Price

LABOR
  • I would like to be free to walk around during labor. I wish to be able to move around and change position at will throughout labor. I would like to be able to have fluids by mouth throughout the first stage of labor.
    MONITORING
I do not want an internal monitor unless the baby has shown some sign of distress.
    LABOR AUGMENTATION/INDUCTION
If labor is not progressing, I would like to have the amniotic membrane ruptured before other methods are used to augment labor. I would prefer to be allowed to try changing position and other natural methods (walking, nipple stimulation) before pitocin is administered.
    ANESTHESIA/PAIN MEDICATION
I realize that many pain medications exist I'll ask for them if I need them. Before considering an epidural, and if the situation warrants, I would like to try an injection of narcotic pain relief (Nubain, Demerol, Stadol or similar).
    CESAREAN
Unless absolutely necessary, I would like to avoid a Cesarean. I would like (coach) present at all times if the baby requires a Cesarean delivery. I wish to have an epidural for anesthesia
    EPISIOTOMY
I would prefer not to have an episiotomy unless absolutely required for the baby's safety. I would appreciate guidance in when to push and when to stop pushing so the perineum can stretch. I would like a local anesthetic to repair a tear or an episiotomy.
    DELIVERY
I would like (partner) and/or nurses to support me and my legs as necessary during the pushing stage. I would like to have the baby placed on my stomach/chest immediately after delivery.
    IMMEDIATELY AFTER DELIVERY
I would like to have (coach) cut the cord.
    POSTPARTUM
I would like a private room, if available.
    BREASTFEEDING
I do not plan to breastfeed the baby.
    CIRCUMCISION
I would like the baby to be circumcised before we check out of the hospital.
    PHOTO/VIDEO
I would like to take still photographs during labor and the birth.
    OTHER
I would like my other child/ren to be able to visit me and the baby in the hospital.

The hospital I plan to deliver at has a check-the-box birthplan of things they offer and allow. Even if you do a birthplan, you might have stuff in there that your hospital may not permit, so talk to them. Sometimes you can add stuff, as long as it is reasonable. I've added that I'd like people to knock before entering the room and to explain procedures before they are performed--to include risk, benefit, and risk if I delay or decline the procedure (barring a real emergency, of course).

I think making a birth plan is a good exercise. It gives you the chance to research different options beforehand while you are relaxed and you might get an idea of what you want or prefer given different situations. Mine is for a natural birth. However, if interventions are needed, then I already know what I am comfortable with. I do not plan on an epidural, but circumstances may dictate it is necessary (go into labor in the evening after being up all day at work, I might want one to get some rest or if I "fail to progress" (which could be likely--I stay at 3 cm for-freaking-ever--docs have been known to "give up", then go from 4-10 in like 30 minutes--thank goodness I was not already prepped for surgery when the decision to section was made), I might try an epidural trial to see if I relax enough or if I need a c-section).

My cousin had a good birthing plan, with strict rules and regulations. She is suppose to let me check it out. I started on mine, after reveiving some emails from various websites on how to create one and what is important etc.

Now that I will go into labor early and being high risk, I really have to look deeper into things, to make sure every stepping stone is covered. Ill find some of those sites that have you fill it out, and you print it out for your Dr's. Which its a good things to have your Drs look at the plan in advance, so they can have a general idea and know prehand

Honestly, most doctors don't even go by a birth plan. I made one for my first son, the nurse skimmed it over and set it aside and that was it. They didn't follow anything on it including "unless there are complications, I want the baby to be place on my stomach when he/she first arrives" Their excuse was "we didn't know" WTF ever, lol. I made one for this pregnancy and I showed my OB. He said they will make a better effort, wtf? lol

I used the one on iparenting
