Help with weaning the bottle?

posted 30th Sep
Ok so Nathan's got a little over a month before his first b-day...Everytime after he eats solid foods he still wants a bottle. I try to give him water but he refuses and only wants formula. So I'm thinking that now would be best to start weaning him because I'm only going to be giving him the bottle for another month. Any ideas as of how to do this?

There's no need to rush him off the bottle. It's not doing him any harm, and it might do more harm then good to rush him into something he's physically and emotionally not ready for.

I didn't take the bottle away until he was 2 actually........and I just gave him a sippy cup and if he didn't want it, I knew he would drink it eventually when he was thirsty........and he got used to it real quick then......

my babys dr said that 6 months old is the best age to get off a bottle and start a sippy cup.... it took 3 days to get my daughter off the bottle... the first day i gave her a sippy cup all day and when she would whine for a bottle i would distract her and focus her attention on something else, then i gave it to her at nap time and at bedtime, the next day i only gave it to her at bedtime and then the third night i kept taking it from her and giving her her sippy cup and then the last time i took it form her i threw it away and she was fine..............

Doctors only know what often works for most babies. All babies are different, and I wouldn't trust a doctor to know what's best for my baby with regards to things like bottles, which have absolutely nothing to do with her health...

hey, I had a peditrician say that my baby choking was normal.

I would give my son some baby food when he was the appropiate age and all and no matter what......even the smallest spoonful mind you, he would choke most of the time and I would have to be careful

that is not normal.....damn doctor.

I think it's more of a comfort to him than anything but I'm just wondering if a sippy cup would be better. And also if I should be weaning him slowly off of formula or just wait until he's 12 months and then worry about it.

CJ has been off the bottle since about 9.5-10 months old. We just started giving him sippy cups all day and then one bottle at night an hour or so before bed time. After about a week of that he wanted nothing to do with the bottle when it came time to have it. Been bottle free ever since.

We put his formula/milk in his sippy cup. You are allowed to do that. It doesn't have to be water or juice. He's even off soft tipped cups and using hard tipped.

My girls had their bottle taken away when they were 12 months. The first night was nothing but screaming. I gave them a sippie cup of water. They threw a fit the first night and it was over. No more bottles or formula!

I started the sippy cup thing. He has sippy cups during the day but point blank refuses to have one before bed.

I have no idea how to stop bottles completely either =\. I've tried everything!

6 months-introduced sippy cup
She only got a bottle at naptime/bedtime and the rest of the day formula was served in a sippy cup.

7 months-9 months -mastered the sippy cup
She only got a bottle at naptime/bedtime and the rest of the day formula was served in a sippy cup.

9 months-took away the middle of the night bottles
took away an ounce of formula each week until she was down to water then took the bottle away completely. Refused to get out of bed to "serve" another bottle. She got the picture within a few days time. I did this with each bottle until she no longer got a bottle.

10 months-took away the nap bottle COLD TURKEY
She cried, she screamed, but she went to sleep anyways

11 months-down to ONE bottle at bedtime
Tried putting it in the sippy cup but she would only use ONE TYPE of cup (which we only had one of). So I we went cold turkey.. She cried, she screamed but went to sleep.

11 1/2 months-totally formula/bottle broke and introduced whole milk in a sippy cup. She LOVES milk and asks for more after the intial 4oz I gave her. Its a SUCCESS.. My child LOVES milk and asks for MORE

16 months-bottles are long gone from the house, leftover unopened formula long since sold too.. She is happy drinking milk and only thinks to ask for a bottle when she see's her 10 month old cousins' bottle. You take it out of sight and its out of mind.

I think I'll try this way...It sounds most promising. Thank you.

My son was weened off the boob not a bottle.
So i cut it to 2 nursing times..1 in the am and 1 at night.
Just try that with him with the bottle.
And try a sippy for awhile.
But if you dont want to do that..Make sure all the bottles are out of site.
If he dont see it..maybe he wont want it?
Good luck!
