starting cereal early?

posted 30th Sep
i know a lot of people say not to until 31/2-6 months, but I've also been reading a lot about moms who have started their babies off waaaay earlier.

my son will be 8 weeks thursday, the last time he was weighed was 2 weeks ago and he weighed 12 lbs. he eats 5-6 (sometimes 8!) oz of formula every 2 hours!! it just seems like he is always hungry. sometimes even an hour will just go by and he wants to eat again. i was reading on yahoo and some women said they gave their babies cereal and it helped a lot.

just curious as to those of you who have done it early-- how early, and did it help at all?

and yeah yeah i know, a lot of people are going to disagree with this but i'm not concerned about that-- i only want to hear from moms who have done this and the results they received.

I know another mommy's little guy had a REALLY bad reaction to having cereal early. His tummy just wasn't ready.

I wouldn't recommend starting it now.  I would wait.  Nathan had a bad reaction and I started him at 4 months.  Maybe he's going through a growth spurt.

His tummy probably won't be able to take it.
I would talk to your pedi if you are really worried that he is wanting to eat too much.

First of all, I would recommend talking to your pedi before starting anything new. Now with my son, I started him on it at about 6 weeks, after getting the ok from our pediatrician. He would eat 14-16 oz of formula just before bed before he would finally be satisfied. In our case, our pedi agreed the cereal in his nighttime bottle, was better then him eating 40+ oz of formula in a day. Since we started it, hes much more content at night-and overall a much happier baby during the day as well. The one thing he did point out to us, is it is NOT advised simply for making a baby sleep through the night-which was not our case since my son was sleeping through the night at 5 weeks old. He said anything he eats is going to be pooped out within 3 hours anyways, so if he was doing well with the cereal, then to continue giving it to him.

He's probably going through a growth spurt. Kaden at the much at times too. He still sometimes does. He'll be 4 months on Friday and I'm still not sure if I'll start him on cereal yet.

Hhah. you may open up a can of worms with this one. there are some people who assume their opinion about this is the LAW and that you cannot give it to your child that early.. or for any reason.

My suggestion, just ask your doctor.

Plenty of children were on it early.
Some were not.
I'd look at why you need it and see what your pediatrician thinks.

If you already know you're going to get a bunch of women saying don't do it, then consider they're all saying it for a reason. That's way too early.

Has your pedi said anything about the weight gain and fluid oz intake?

If he is hungry then feed him!! Breastmilk and formula IS food. Part of having an infant is having to feed them all the time - not look for shortcuts making it more convienient for you and risky for him. In the first few weeks/ months he will go through many many growth spurts - that doesnt mean he is ready for solids - it means he needs more milk. Milk carries all the nutrition he needs until 6 months and from 6-12 months should continue to be the primary source of nurtition while supplimented with healthy solids.

my daughter is a big girl too, and i still waited until 7 months. i think a lot of the excuses that people use to start solids are b.s.
