re: Breastfeeding (the toddler years)

my DH is getting on my case to wean again and it is bugging me so much! I have Finn night weaned (he will be 2 yr 7 m tomorrow), but he still nurses during the day. I would be happy for him to be weaned, but I know he's not ready for it, plus the fact that Leo is only 4.5m old, so he would have to watch his brother nursing, knowing that he's "not allowed to" and I think that's cruel.

I already promised DH I'd wean him by his 3rd birthday, just to try to get him to shut up a bit and he was ok for awhile, but now he's getting on my case again. I don't know why though. Nursing makes things EASIER,not harder!

I'm sorry that you having to have that conversation. I was mentally preparing for it myself since Cambria was over 2. Fortunately I didn't have to do it since DH was surprisingly supportive. I wish I had words that would help. Maybe emphasize how easy X situation is because of breastfeeding???

Hello ladies, I am 30w5d and my breasts are leaking colostrum really bad right now and was wondering something. I have never experienced this leaking before giving birth and was wondering even if the colostrum turns to actual milk does that mean there is no more colostrum for when the baby is born? I know I sound silly but DH was also curious and I dont know the answer.

the colostrum won't turn to milk until after the baby is born.

oh we've had that talk SO many times. I even stopped nursing him for a whole 2 weeks once, in the hopes that he would just wean then. (I was hospitalized for a few days and couldn't keep anything down, so I could only nurse the baby during that time anyway), but nap times became a nightmare, so I said, "no way. I'm just gonna nurse him. It's so much easier" and for awhile, he would just nurse for his naps, but in the last few months, he's gone back to nursing a few more times during the day as well.

If we are out and about, he is usually too distracted though and doesn't nurse then.

Sounds like my daughter bedtime and mornings mainly. I wish I was bak where you are. I had to quit with the last pregnancy and unlike the last time we stopped for a pregnancy, she isn't interested anymore. I am sad and miss it. Don't let anyone force you quit something neither of you are ready for. You will never regret continuing nursing, you will regret quitting. Sorry I'm not more helpful but maybe it helps having someone backing you. Good luck

Just found out I'm pregnant.
I'm still nursing my 2 year old. I would really like to wean her but she is so attached. Help? And is the pregnancy likely to affect my supply at all?

My milk just dried up around a week ago. I'm 17 weeks now, I expected to have some for a bit longer but I've been dehydrated the entire pregnancy so I wasn't completely surprised that it's gone.
I expected it to be hard but my 23 month old weaned no problem, she was dry nursing for a few days so I think it was a gradual decrease instead of just completely running out.

nah thanks. that does help. sometimes I really do want to quit for me. I even told DH I'd quit by his 3rd birthday, even though I originally wanted to self-wean. At first, that shut DH up, but now that he's back "ranting and raving" I might just keep going and let him self-wean after all (if he doesn't wean on his own before 3). Since I have to deal with DH anyway.

yes, your milk supply will most likely go down. this happens in probably 90% of cases, no matter how good your supply is when you got pg. if you want to wean her, i would do it gradually. as your supply goes down, it will also change in taste and texture and it's usually easier to wean then. there is also a thread for mamas who are pg and BFing and you could ask in there.

Just keep nursing her for now and when your supply drops she will probably mostly wean herself.
Another thing you can try is just cutting out one feeding a day. The first thing I did was cut out any day feedings at all. I only nursed once at night and once in the morning. Then I cut out the one in the morning, and by that time the last one was easy.
Now he nurses once every few days, but I don't have any milk left. I haven't had any since like 8 weeks probably.

Thanks ladies!! It is a relief to know that my supply will probably drop and she'll probably self-wean. I am so ready to be done nursing.. I mean I'd at least like a break before the new one arrives and it's back to nursing 24/7. Back to square one!! Ugh!
I'm quite excited tho don't get me wrong

I def think it's easier to encourage weaning while pg than while not. I'm pretty sure I could have weaned my son while I was pg, but I wanted him to nurse at least 2 years. (he was 17 or 18m when I got pg)
