Big question. DD is 17 months old and still breastfeeding sporadically during the day and a lot at night. My husband and I have plans to spend our first nights away from her in a few weeks. One night away one weekend and two nights away the next weekend. I'm hoping that this time away isn't going to cause her to wean. I didn't breastfeed my older child so I'm not familiar with weaning and I'm wondering what you ladies think. I plan to pump so she has some breastmilk while I'm gone but I don't want her to stop nursing altogether. Do you all think she'll just just go right back to nursing when I get back to her or do you think this is it for our nursing relationship? I'm nervous.

I don't think it will cause her to wean at ALL lol. I spent nights away from my son at that age he used to go with his dad sometimes. at first he would cry but now it doesnt bother him. he's 26 months old and still going strong. I actually have been cutting his sessions down now he only does in the morning when he wakes and at night before bed and for only approximately 5 minutes. I keep hoping he'll just cut himself off but NOPE

Well I'm glad to hear that she shouldn't wean from a few nights away from me. I was getting really anxious about leaving her because I really want to continue breastfeeding.

I don't wanna jinx it but LO (20 months) has only nursed once through the night for the past 5 days! I feel so much more rested now that she has stopped the every 2 hour nursing!

Last night my oldest daughter had her first sleepover and one of her friends wandered upstairs while I was nursing LO to sleep- she looks at me and goes "I know what you're doing...you're milking that baby!" hahaha! I thought you ladies would get a kick out of that

My daughter is turning 14 months old today and we went for her 12 month check up just last week. (It was a little late. lol) But her pediatrician told me "No breast milk after 12 months." She said only Whole Cows milk. I was like "I was planning on going until she's potty trained." To which she replied "That could be until she is 2 or older!" I just said "Well, my niece wasn't potty trained until 3 years." But I wish I would've said so much more.
Next time I go in I'm bringing in pages & pages of WHO & AAP reports & why breastfeeding past 2 years is beneficial and normal. Because obviously our pediatrician hasn't had any proper pediatric training since the Dark Ages.

I never ceases to amaze me how little most doctors know about breastfeeding! I have run into it time and time again...I had a dentist that refused to fill a cavity because I was breastfeeding, an eye Dr. that wouldn't give me an antibiotic because I was breastfeeding, and numerous doctors that have said things like "oh, you're STILL breastfeeding" or "It's not really benificial after the first year"   In my experience Dr.s are usually some of the most ignorant people about breastfeeding- and the worst part is that they are usually unwilling to listen to what you have to say because they think they know everything!

When I found my sons pediatrician, I made sure he had one who fully supported breastfeeding. She was AWESOME, and unfortunately she left right after his 2 yr appointment. The one we got in place of her tried telling us that our son was slightly underweight because I'm still breastfeeding and that it fills them up and they dont eat "real" food. No, my son is slightly underweight because he's my son and I have always been the same way. SKINNY

Ugh, I don't know who's teaching them, but they need new text books. The worst part is, that there are people that actually trust and listen to them!

Yep. I ton of women end up stopping breastfeeding because of something their doctor has said. I see it on BG all the time- stories about the doctor saying they need to supplement, and then they don't understand why their milk is drying up and before you know it- they have to stop altogether!

OMG what an idiot! Not only do you NOT need to stop BFing at 12m, but you NEVER need to give a kid cow's milk. *facepalm* wow.
