re: Breastfeeding (the toddler years)

posted 6th Nov
So this weekend I was planning on cutting out the 7:30 am ish feeding. During the week its the one before I go to work. Well today when we got to my MIL's Maddie went right over to her toys and was playing... usually she is climbing my legs, hands down my shirt. So I decided to just leave and see how she did. MIL said she was fine, ate a waffle and drank a cup of milk! So looks like we are down to two feedings. I like ending on a positive note, while we are both happy with it.

She had her 1year old check up today. 22lbs 4oz, 30.75 inches. She was 8lbs 12oz and 21.5" when she was born! Man, they grow fast!

I was just reading the past couple of pages.

I nursed my daughter until she was 17 months. I was 2 months pregnant when I stopped. I just didn't have the energy to do it all. So I knew when baby was born she would show interest in nursing and of course she did. Like Cheryl said I let her try nursing again and she also found it amusing. She did itoccasionally, but I guess for kicks and giggles. I didn't want to push her away and make her feel left out. Eventually she stopped coming to me and realized it was for baby.

Out ofcuriosity for all the extended breastfeeding mothers. How often does your toddler nurse?

Niklas has really cut back and is now down to usually nursing only once a day (first thing in the morning). He does occasionally want to nurse in the afternoon as well, but he's asking less and less. He'll be 2 at the end of the month.

oh and I answered the question but I don't consider nursing till 2 as "extended breastfeeding" since WHO recommends a MINIMUM of 2 years for nursing. I would consider "extended breastfeeding" starting after 2 but even probably more so after 3 years old. (IMO)

Oh okay. I didn't know that

I plan on nursing my son until he is 2. But now I was considering nursing after 2, but everyone thinks that is too long.

I assume you live in America. Americans in general seem to have a slightly weird outlook to breastfeeding (no offence to my american friends and to the many american women who do breastfeed!)

I guess it will depend on you and how determined you are to do the best for you and your child despite what everyone else thinks. It's not easy and not comfortable going against what everyone else does. But do they even have to know? Toddlers usually are already cutting back on nursing and when taught nursing manners, there is usually no reason that anyone even needs to know that you are still nursing.

Just don't stop because others have pressured you to stop. If you realise that it's time to stop, then yes, stop, but if you want to continue, don't let others influence you.

Yes I do lol.

I won't let anyone influence mydecision to stop or continue. I've made it this far on lots of crazy looks and comments and he is only 15 months old.

I call nursing until 2 to be "full term" nursing. And beyond that as "Extended nursing". Personally.

Anyone have any experiences pumping for a one year old?
When i go back to school next semester i am wondering what pumping will look like. Did you have a supply to regularly pump for your one year old? How much would they drink in 4-6 hours? How many ounces were their bottles? I would like to leave her something to drink for the 6 hours i will be gone in the evenings... i will only be going twice a week.

what were your experiences?

they absolutely do not need cows milk if you are still BFing. I started my LO anyway at 13 months just because I wanted him to get used to it in case my milk dried up from being pregnant. He doesn't get much and he doesn't get it every day but he knows what cow milk is just in case.

My daughter is 14 months, and I pump regularly at work. My supply goes up and down with my menstrual cycle, but I do have a regular supply to pump from because she still nurses regularly when we're together. We're apart for 9 hours during the day, and she drinks about an oz per hour we're apart. I would pump for whatever feedings you're going to miss, if you can. My daughter doesn't take a bottle anymore, but we just offer 3-5 oz at a time when she wants it. Every kiddo is different - just try to get a good read on how much your LO will take in a sitting and go with it.

Also, I started my daughter on cows milk after 1 year...but she gets like 2oz a day. I just give it to her for something to drink with her dinner. I let her decide how much she wants, but boob juice always comes before cows milk. No, they don't NEED it, your BM is way better if you can provide it.

hi guys. Anybody have advice for weaning a 2 year old? my daughter Macy will be 2 years old on December 1st and i'd like to have her weaned itleast by the time she's 2 and a half, like next summer so we'll have more time to do stuff that way to.

i'm gonna totally miss it though cuz i'm not really in a position to have any more kids itleast for awhile either  She loooves the boob and doesn't like cows milk too much. \we are down to one time a night nursing, one in the morning, one at night.

Although she has been asking for it more often lately, but shes got a cold to i guess. I think i am happy with nursing until she is 2 or two and a half. i'd like us to be able to get outta the house quicker and have more fun, i don't want to nurse her until she'd like 4 either.

Any advice would be greatlyappreciated.
