There is no way I could just stop nursing cold turkey. Olivia would not have it.

Yeah, but I think that 4 oz is what they can have at this age. It's good to introduce it anyway around now (or I did) so that they get a taste for it.

IMO you need a new ob. and why did she say that  unless you have a health issue that makes it unsafe, it is generally a safe thing to do.

I really love my OB--she's been my GYN for ten years! I didn't actually ask since I wasn't planning to get pregnant any time soon at the time, and it was mentioned in passing.

I have heard of the hormones during bfing causing early miscarriages but that is hormonal. it makes the body unable to hold a pregnancy. however, this is not necessarily true...I am looking it up

Although there are numerous conflicting opinions on the issue ofbreastfeedingduring pregnancy, no research has ever found any increased risk of miscarriage in women who continue breastfeeding an older child during pregnancy.
In the past, doctors used to advise women to stop nursing when they became pregnant again. The concerns were that breastfeeding could deprive the developing baby of nutrients or stimulate uterine contractions (because breastfeeding causes increasedoxytocinlevels, which also can cause uterine contractions). But there is no conclusive evidence that this occurs and babies born to mothers who breastfed during pregnancy appear to be perfectly healthy.
The consensus is that it's up to the moms to decide whether to keep nursing during a new pregnancy. In a few high risk conditions, such asplacenta previa, doctors may advise increased caution but for most, nursing during pregnancy is probably safe.

this one is straight to the point:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_breastfeeding_cause_a_miscarriage

The mother facing the decision of whether to wean or continue nursing during her pregnancy often has mixed emotions, and may get conflicting advice from friends, family, and health care providers. The most common concern is whether continuing to breastfeed will put the expected baby at risk in some way. There is no evidence to suggest that nursing while pregnant endangers the fetus during a normal pregnancy. If a mother has previously delivered a premature baby, develops signs of pre-term labor, or is carrying multiples, there is concern that a hormone released during lactation (oxytocin) may stimulate contractions and trigger a premature labor. In these special situations, mothers are often advised to wean their older child. Research suggests that the uterus is not receptive to hormonal stimulation from oxytocin until around 24 weeks gestation, so it is generally safe to consider nursing until about 20 weeks, even in these special situations. There is almost never a need to wean abruptly during pregnancy.

Oh i see. I just posted a bunch of info. I have known SEVERAL women to nurse during pregnancy with no problems other than tenderness and tiredness. which can happen anyway If you have high risk pregnancy or something then it may be different

I had lots and lots of preterm labor, that I think was BH it never did anything to my cervix and was on bedrest with Lydia. I am hoping that it won't cause problems for us, because I don't see her weaning soon and if I ever get regular I want to TTC. but I am on anywhere from a 46 to 60 day cycle....

I wonder if it is connected to the fact I had preeclampsia--or maybe to the severe cramping I had my first trimester. I should do some more research. Or maybe I'll ask her when the time comes. If I disagree with the answer, I just won't follow her orders.

I don't follow EVERYTHING my doc says if I research and feel that his answer goes against my instincts.

Do you mean that you wonder if what she said is because of that?

Were you thin before you got preg? I had SUPER tight abs and was thin and I had a LOT of cramping in m first tri and then at the end from 27 weeks on was on bedrest for contractions every 5-15 min and they would have to stop them at the hospital once every 2 weeks or so. but they never dilated me. i think it was my tiny body making room for her!

LOL! No, I was overweight. And yes, I wonder if she has concerns about the Pre-e or the early cramps. My cramps stopped after the first trimester. Yours sound like a horrible experience!!

wasn't too bad. I mean, it sucked, but she was overdue by four days and she was very very healthy. I got a lot of sewing done (by hand in bed) and crosstitching...
