re: Breastfeeding (the toddler years)

Good idea Holly!

I'm Danielle and i'm still nursing my son Easton who will be 14 months on the 16th of October. We are currently only nursing 2 times a day, early morning and before bed. It works for us since I work full-time. I am so glad I have been able to stick it out this long.

Holly, I think once you cut back to the two times a day (if that is what you choose to do) then you will be much happier with your BFing experience. You get SOME freedom but still know that you are providing your little one with the good stuff.

Holly I just PMed Mara about this thread... i'm hoping to get it STICKIFIED! I think having a thread around will encourage more moms to breastfeed past one!

Aww, thanks. It's been a challenge, but I would not change a thing. Everyone I know just thinks i'm nuts for even trying.

Thats how i did it! But slowly and then he didnt "need" me...   13 months...he was finished!
But i was also preggo so he might of noticed a change in the milk.
Gl and glad your stickin with it!

I am still bf Daniel and he is almost 16mths. I have tried to stop for 4 months now but it hasn't worked, he only wants it more. I have managed to cut down on his evening boob but that's it. I dont see him self weaning anytime soon. But I dont like it when he gets angry and sad and cries, it is like i am hurting his feelings, it is terrible. I cant let him cry, i just cant do it.

Hi I'm Christina and I'm going to let Jamil self wean, He is just 12 months old though.

Wow Danielle I can't believe Easton is 14 months.. (I guess Jamil does only have another week until he's 13 months.

My daughter is 19 months, & i'm still bfing.
probably 3-4 times a day, lasting anywhere from 1-10 min.
they're just little 'milk snacks' lol.
she nurses mostly when she's tired & ready to go to bed.
i'm planning on weaning her @ 2, but hopefully she'll self wean.

That sounds like a great idea! More moms should def, nurse, and try to nurse until/beyond one! There isn't anything wrong with it

I'm Jackie and my little guy is Robert. He is 14 months-ha -I was about to write 13   -and still nurses 3 times a day. I'm planning on letting him self-wean, although, since I've delayed his shot, I'm going to try to continue until he's two. I love it though -I used to get frustrated when he was little because he nursed so often but now I can't believe that sometime soon he wont even need me anymore. It's crazy!

oh this is a real good idea. Niklas isn't a toddler yet but I do plan on self weaning so I'd like to keep an eye on what's being discussed here. Right now he's 10 months old. I exclusively breastfed him until he was 8 months old before starting on solids. He still mainly nurses but also eats 3 small meals/day of solids (I've never boughten baby food, I made my own and now he's on table foods). I've never pumped other than when he went through a short nursing strike at 9 months and I had to pump to relieve engorgement. Other than the nursing strike, nursing has been great and I have no problems with NIP (without a cover) other than he gets distracted so I do try to plan his nursing times to be at home. I just hope that nursing continues to be so great as he gets older!

I agree..what a wonderful idea! I'm not nursing a toddler right now (Tyler is only 9 months) but I have in the past...nursed Gracie until she was 18 months.

There are definitely different sorts of questions that come up with nursing a toddler. It would be nice to hvae suppoet and answers for those bumps in the road too.

I think you are right Danielle and I've always asked you questions because I think you have a great balance with it. I'm pretty sure that is the route I am going to take!

Thanks and I think that would be great! I think so many of us are unsure about breastfeeding past one and I intentionally didn't name it "extended breastfeeding" because I think that freaks people out sometimes...haha!
