Nipple pain...

posted 29th Sep
I know I've posted several times about different kinds of pain or problems, but this may be a little different.

I know it can't be thrush--I've been treating my daughter and I for over two weeks. The right breast and nipple are fine. The left one is extremely sore when she latches on (the soreness fades but doesn't stop after nursing for a few minutes). The entire breasts almost itches, which I know sounds like thrush. I get engorged easily. This morning I tried to express some milk by hand before feeding her. As soon as she latched on it hurt pretty badly and I unlatched her to discover a fair amount of blood. The center of the nipple was bleeding. I keep lanolin on my nipples at all times. After nursing, my nipples are sometimes white in places or darkly colored...almost like a bruise. The white goes away after 30 minutes or so, but the dark only goes away sometimes. I'm feeling at whits end because we've had some sort of pain or problem since she was weeks old and she's 6 weeks now. I can't take having pain every 2 hours for the rest of the time she's an infant.

I had the same problem with my daughter when I was nursing, I never had thrush though. Sometimes after she nursed her mouth would be surrounded in blood, it was extremely painful. I went to a lactation consultant and she said it was from her latching on incorrectly. Then it started itching all over my breas and was turning red, it turned out I had mastitis. I hope that doesnt happen to you. Maybe she's not latching on the right way, that was my problem. The lactation consultant helped me a lot

Someone is coming over to check my latch today. My left side has started to get itchy and I'm wondering if it's mastitis. Can a doctor tell early on? I may go to the doctor to have it checked before it gets worse if it is mastitis...

Im pretty sure they can tell early on. I didnt go to the doctor until it was really serious. By then my whole breast was really itchy and hurt to the touch, the skin also looked pink. If you think thats what it is, you should get it checked out early. I was in the hospital for 3 days for it and given tons of antibiotics. Hope you dont have it!
