Cleaning/Disinfecting Toys

posted 28th Sep
My DH brought home a cold last week, and my daughter had some congestion and a tiny cough for about 2 days this week, I cleaned her toys (used about a drop or so of Dawn in a mixing bowl of warm water and wiped them with a cloth) on Thursday, and I have caught the cold myself and have had it a few days now, and this morning DD had some sniffles again, though no cough and it doesn't seem bad at all.... But I was thinking either she caught it again from me, it never really went away yet, or maybe I should have cleaned the toys again... So I looked up some info on cleaning/disinfecting toys and it says you should use bleach and infant toys need to be washed DAILY, sick or not.
How many moms actually do this? Because I will admit, I sure as heck don't. I am lucky if I get to it once or twice a month... Teething rings I wash with every use, but plush toys and regular toys I let go longer, unless they get spitup on them or dropped in a public place or something else O_o
I will say I honestly am developing a hatred for reading labels that say "Surface wash only", because it is just so easy to grab the toys that are machine wash and toss them in with laundry every other day, or the teething rings or purely plastic toys (like links and things) and just wash them in the sink, but if it is surface wash, it sits until I have a moment and actually remember.

For moms who do wash daily, how? How do you keep up and when do you set aside toy washing time?

My son is 8 months old and I NEVER washed his toys daily. I normally do it about once a month. I use a cap full of bleach and then rinse then really well under warm water. I would never have the time to do it daily. Another good thing to use is the bleach wipes and just wipe them down if you are in a hurry.

To be honest, I dump everything that's not made of plastic or that has electronics into the washer. I couldn't care less if it says surface wash only. I don't have the time or patience for that and I have yet to figure out how I'm supposed to get it clean enough if I wipe it down (after my son has been drooling on it). I figure if it disintegrates in the washer, it's a crappy toy and I don't want it anyway, lol.

Plastic and electronic toys - I wipe those down every so often. And no, I don't have the time to do it every day. I know I should, but come on! I have a baby and ten million other things I'm supposed to be doing. I still have a bag of toys given to me that I haven't given him because I haven't found the time to sanitize those....they should make everything strong and durable enough to wash in the washer or the dishwasher.

Daily really isn't needed when your child is the only one playing with the toys. In daycare infant rooms, they clean toys daily because there are many children playing with the same toys and mouthing them. At home, I would clean toys once a week. For plastic toys, 1 to 10 ratio of javex to water. And for anything that can go in the washer, I would do that! Even some plastic toys can go in the dishwasher, btw.

Yeah... I don't really trust the bleach wipes because of the chemicals they leave behind. I have mostly switched my house to baby-safe products that don't use chemicals at all. If I am in a hurry, I grab the toys she has used and switch them out for clean ones from the toy box! *lol*

WOw- nope- no daily washing here and my kids have always been pretty healthy. As infants I washed a little more often- but even then mostly only when visibly soiled. WELL used toys maybe once a week? When one was sick I think I did pretty much grab it and wipe it down after use- but that's it.

Thanks for that info, makes me not feel so bad. She is definitely the only one playing with her toys unless you count the cats... But they don't drool on things, just swat them

When Jamil was a tiny infant I would wash the toys every day, Well half one day and half the next, but once he started crawling, it was all over my paranoia was gone and I rarley wash toys now. He also dosen't put many toys in his mouth.

I was super paranoid about Thrush, and if he had it I would get it and we would keep getting it, so I washed his toys with vinegar.

Now I dump toys on the floor and spray them either with clorox anywhere or vinager and water... The ones I can put in the washing machine or dish washer I do...
