There'sa difference between a reward (which to me is positive reinforcement) and a bribe, and this woman is using the latter of the two...rather unsuccessfully, from the sounds of it.

IMHO bribes create brats who expect maximum results for minimal efforts---why would you tell your child just to do the bare minimum required to "win" something they want? I'd rather hold them to a high standard and reward them occasionally for meeting the challenge.

*But* what works for some may not work for all, so I'm not speaking for anyone other than myself.

if my kids act up they get corner time.. or room time with NO TV..PHONE etc.. for older ones.. i will go take it all out.. if they dont listen..
and when they are well behaved.. i will take them to get ICE CREAM..or soemthign fun for them to do.. and i let them know their HELPING me by listening was very appreciated.. but i dont say. OH il wont take u here and wont buy u this and that.. i dont use that method.. if i am out in public and they act up..im like ok fine.. corner when u get home.. very calmly etc. and theyve all learned.. piss momma off.. she can be a royal PAIN to deal with.

My momused to do that to me, but I definately think it's wrong to do that and I hate when I hear people saying that stuff too.

I don't mind seeing a parent give a pop on the booty every now and again; what bothers me (downright scares me, really) is when they're obviously losing their temper.

I was out one day and this woman had her 2 sons with her and the older boy had drank all of her tea from McDonalds. She told him she was goingh to get a happy meal and eat it in front of him and not give him any of it. I thought she just sounded dumb. I got the feeling she probably told him he could have a drink if he'd sit quietly.
