breech baby at 36 weeks

posted 27th Sep '08
okay so I'm nearly 37 weeks pregnant, and my baby has been head down the whole pregnancy, up until this week hes turned breech. Strange much? I've heard of breech babies turning at 36 weeks but I haven't heard of a baby becoming breech at 36?
I was in hospital wednesday night coz they thought I might of been in labour and had to monitor me to make sure I wasn't. They're going to talk to me next week if he hasn't already turned about my options n stuff. Anyone heard of this happening before?
Any mums or mums to be had a breech baby and could give me any advice? I'm pretty scared, got my fingers crossed he turns coz I really don't want a caesarean.

They also mentioned doing that ECV thing where they try and turn the baby but they said theres a few risks to baby, anyone know a bit more about that?

thanks guys

There are some exercises you can do to try to help him turn back around...I don't remember what oned though..
My aunt said call L&D and then ask for some kind of nurse (can't remeber what kind) and she could call tell me.. so maybe try calling and just asking about it and see if they can direct you to the right person to talk to?

They told me one excercise you can do, where you kneel on the floor with your head on the ground and your bum in the air. its hell uncomfortable especially coz my bellys so big, it kills my back but im doing it every chance i get. just want this little guy to be good and turn!

Obviously you have the internet... I know there's exercises and things you can do to help the baby turn around. Just check it out on the internet. There's a whole world of advice... see what you can find, and if you're not satisfied just talk to your doctor. And by the way.. c-sections aren't that bad. At least you'll have a baby with a perfectly round head instead of the alien ones..hahaha

I had the EVC but it didnt work   but my friend did have one the week before that did work, it put her into labour and she had her baby that night.
The main risks I can remember is going into labour (thats why they dont do it until 38 weeks +, damage to your placenta which could cause bleeding and getting the cord wrapped around the baby's neck. There is more but I cant remember it was 1 year ago.

I saw a show on TV once that had this lady take a bag of frozen veggies and put the veggies by the babies head and kept moving the bag lower and the baby's head followed...

You could probably google it. It was very interesting.

Do you know if the risks with the cord wrapping around the baby n that are high? I really want to try the ecv but i'd rather a caesarean then doing anything that could harm the baby. Also I read it has less chance of working if its your first baby or something?

Here are 17 Ways to Turn Your Breech Baby

Be sure to check with your provider before trying the positions for turning a breech baby to see if there is any reason why you should not use them.
Visualizing the baby moving down with the head very deep in your pelvis, several times a day; especially in conjunction with positions and exercises below.
Swimming as often as possible. This keeps your body and pelvis loose and relaxed. Do in conjunction with headstand below if you have help.
Headstand - with assistance and in a pool frequently as possible.
Breech Tilt - begin at 32-35 weeks gestation. Do 3 times daily for 10-15 minutes each time, when you have an empty stomach, and the baby is active. Prop one end of an ironing board securely on a sofa or chair 12 to 18 inches high (or may use slant board). Lie down, bend knees but keep feet flat on board. Relax, breathe deeply, avoid tensing. May also use pillows on a flat surface to raise hips 12-18" above shoulders. Gravity pushes the baby's head into the fundus, tucks it, and baby can then do a somersault to a vertex position.
CD/iPod headphones - place them inside mom's pants toward her pubic bone and play classical music for 10 minutes 6-8 times a day.
Flashlight - try moving slowly down from the top of the uterus toward your pubic bone while you are in a breech tilt position.
Massage - start with your left hand at the bottom of the abdomen and your right hand just above it. Move move your hands clockwise around the right side of your tummy. As your right hand reaches the top of your abdomen, slide the left one over your right and move it down the left side of your tummy. Your left hand leads as you you come full circle, continuing clockwise. Massage gently as you would to apply lotion. Massage for ten minutes or more up to several times each day.
Clothespin - place on the small toe of each foot at the outside corner of the toenail; sideways so that the toenail and toepad are stimulated for 30 minutes per day, this is an acupressure point that is a "moving down" point. You can also do this with just finger pressure as you remember to do it.
Motion Sickness band - place with the bead four fingerwidths above the inner ankle bone - another acupressure point that is used for stimulation of the uterus. Do not use this point if you are experiencing any pre-term labor.
Glass of orange or other juice - follow this with a side-lying position with your hips positioned higher than your feet. Babies move more after a sugar high!
Pelvic Tilt- with an ice pack on the top of your tummy on an empty stomach, 10 minutes twice a day. Do this while lying on your back on the floor with knees flexed and feet on the floor with three large pillows placed under your buttocks. Try this in conjunction with headphones and visualization.
Cat stretch - start with all fours, then lay your head and chest flat on the floor with your buttocks in the air, as you round your back and return to all fours.
Knee-chest position - by kneeling with hips flexed slightly more than 90 degree, but with thighs not pressing against your tummy and your head, shoulders and upper chest are flat on a mattress for 15 minutes every two waking hours for five days.

Belly Relaxing followed by Inversion - Partner places a shawl, sheet, towel or rebozo under mom's hips as she lays on the floor. Lift up on the corners of the cloth and shimmy her from side to side moving your hands up and down to wiggle her belly from side to side. These should be very small movements which mom should find very relaxing. Do this for about 5 minutes. Then mother kneels on the stairway landing. Walk your hands down 2 or 3 stairs into an all fours position; have your partner support your shoulders to balance you. Remain in this position for about 5-10 minutes or as long as comfortable. Also do this on an empty stomach.
The following techniques to turn breech babies to vertex involve the assistance of a specialist or medical professional:
15. Acupuncture - find a acupuncturist who is familiar with pregnancy and knows the points to stimulate for turning a breech baby.
16. Webster's Breech Technique - see a Chiropractor who is experienced in this technique.
17. External Version - this can be done in the hospital at about 37 weeks; see an Ob-Gyn for assistance and more information.

While they are doing the EVC they will scan you in between to keep an eye on the baby the chances of the cord wrapping around the baby's neck are low but if the cord is to near the neck or in the wrong position they wont do the EVC. With your first baby it has a very low cance of working because everything is still very tight. Dont want to freak you out but it can be very painful, but if it works all the better.
I went on to have a c-section and believe me it is not as bad as some people make it out to be, I had my wee man at 3.40am on Monday morning and I was home Wednesday at 12 noon, and my was an emergency c-section which I hear can take longer to recover from.

how long does it take to fully recover from a caesar? and it is very painful after? i was worried that if you had one you wouldnt be able to have a vaginal delivery with any babies after but the midwife said you can still try.. i dont know. if he hasnt turned i think i might give the evca shot, hopefully it works. ah well only time will tell i guess.

Recovery depends on the person, I was fully recovered within 11/2 months but I know some people can take a bit longer and some people a lot sooner. You can have a normal delivery after a c-section I believe it is called a VBAC. Again the pain depends on the person how well you handle it, I was off all pain meds by the Friday (5 days after surgery) but some people need to take them a bit longer, I didnt think it was unbearable, dont get me wrong I an not saying it is not painful because it is, it just depends how you can handle it.
I hope the EVC works for you but if not dont worry about it as long as your baby is healthy that all that matters.
Good luck. Keep me informed, let me know how it goes for you xx

My friend's baby was delivered at about 40 weeks. He flipped 3 days before. They were making arrangements to try to flip him but he did it on his own. She didnt try anything else.
Last week i was getting a 3d/4d ultrasound. My baby is transverse right now. I have lots of time, but the tech said putting iPod speakers near your pubic bone and playing music may draw the babies head down. You prolly have to do it a lot.

My daughter was breech. I had the EVC done, but it didn't work. And for me, it REALLY hurt. My husband was in the room, and he said that they were pushing so hard, you could see the outline of the baby through my stomach. There are risks associated with it. If I would've known all the risks, I wouldn't have had it done, but that's me. I ended up having a c-section. And, four weeks ago, I just had my second section. They're not that bad. Not as good as a vag delivery though. I was in the hospital for four days, and didn't even take pain meds. my last day in the hospital, and never got my prescription for them filled.
