Pacifier, or no pacifier, that is the question...

posted 26th Sep
Whats everyones thoughts on dummys/pacifiers? I dont really want to use one, but i guess i wont know until bub is here. Ive read that giving bub one when they go to sleep can reduce the risk of SIDS. Im 50/50 on whether or not to give one to our bub. I have a couple in the cupboard just in case.

I give my son one when I put him to sleep & as soon as he drops asleep, which is usually about 5 minutes or less, he spits it out. I only think its bad when a child is dependent on it, I can understand that it can be a comfort, but to stick it in your childs mouth everytime they cry is the wrong thing to do. A child can be comforted in other ways, for instance my little man (who was 7 weeks yesterday) loves it when you talk to him & stroke his hair, he opens his eyes really wide & stares at you. An some babies don't even like them, they spit them straight out. So if your baby likes it, then let them have it, to comfort them when their going to bed, but just don't let them get dependent on them, interact with them in other ways.

I like the idea of them when they are sleeping but that's it. I don't care for toddlers running around with them in their mouths.

i give my son one, he wouldnt take one straight away though.....but everyone i have talked to about dummies they say hte bigger the cherry the better, the otherdontic ones are shit and rouin the way their mouth forms, and if you have a big cherry it helsp their mouth form better, not saying give a new born a 6 m/old dummy, just find a dummy thats got the biggets cherry for its age group

I'm for them.

My spawn wouldn't take one after 2 months.. but please believe I used a plug while I could!

Plus the whole reducing SIDS thing was a huge bonus.

I gave my little darling one on her 3 day in this world.... the reasons? she was not sucking her thumb she had 4 fingers in her mouth and kept choking herself..... so best bet was a dummy and i love it. She is now 4 months and I wouldn't beable to live with out it.... better for her teeth too...... if it is thumb or dummy I go with dummy......

I was against pacifiers until my daught was born,.... she is a SUCKER... lol, she nearly always wants something to suck on, and since I am breastfeeding I had to try a pacifier for the sake of my breasts! (she was going to gnaw them off if I didn't lol) so you never know what your baby is going to want until they are here!

I am for the binky. When they are still little. Now I just think some parents overdo them. Now when I kid can feed himself and hand you a diaper and wipes it is time to have the kid long off of it. I plan on using one I heard about the SIDS reason and I think it soothes and relaxes them.

I bought some to use ..and my daughter didn't take to a paci until 2 months.. then at 6 months to 1yrshe only used it for sleeping.

At her 1st birthday..We started offering the paci again cause she whined constantly.. Probably wasn't the best thing.. But nothing else calmed her..

She is 15 months old now and is getting better about doing w/out it for hours at a time when she is at home. When we go shopping or she is outside playing she has no issues with doing w/out the paci.

I'm all for them. They're babies, they need to suckle. Let them get a little comfort is my take on it. My baby took one here and there as a newborn, then she found her thumb. Now she sucks her thumb and we have since tossed out the pacis as she has no interest in them anymore. Some babies prefer pacis more than others, but I'd say it's a good idea to have a few on hand for newborns. We used the Soothie ones they had in the hospital.

My first child never took a binky and she was fine with it. She sucked on her thumb knuckle only for a few weeks. My second is another story! She came out sucking on air! If she didn't have a binky she sucked on her lip. She needs her binky! Now that she is 10 1/2 mths getting around she wiil put it down, but she will also go get i when she wants. Babies do have sucking needs and some more than others. I will be 12 wks tomorrow and if my next child needs one I will give it to him/her. It really just depends on your child. I wouldn't let anyone discourage you in doing anything you want with your kids. Everyone has their own opinion on how to raise your kids if you want it or not. I just feel it is your child and you do the best for them, not family, friends, or just people passing by! People can be very rude and judgemental on any topic! Good luck!

My son used the Soothie pacifiers until two months old, then he found his thumb. I'm all for whatever makes them happy, and gives you a little peace.

My son never would take one I tried different ones also. I also heard about the SIDS being a lower chance. I not against it though I think its up to your baby what they want and what is best for you. I just hate when you see a 4 or 5 year old walking around with one. Its like hello they are going to school soon. But just wait to see what work for you.
