Leaving your child unattended?

posted 18th Sep
Dr.Phil's show today left me wondering what you guys think about this topic. Here's the link:

I haven't watched the entire show yet, but I'm wondering what you guys think about leaving your children in the car while you go into a store or any building for that matter. Is it different if you can "see" the car from where you are in the store? Or is it never acceptable if you're more than two feet or so away where you can get to him/her within a few seconds?

I never leave Sadie in the car alone unless its like I parked next to someone I know and got out for a sec to grab something from them...and even then a door is open so there is air going thru and I can hear her...

I personally wouldn't do it. Shit happens in a split second when you turn your back in the safety of your own home. I wouldn't trust the world to watch my children while I was off for a gallon of milk and a Slim Jim. I feel weird even being out of the car when they're shut in it at the gas station.

I think it depends on how old they are. I don't think I'd ever leave my child under the age of say 8 in the car no matter how far away or if I could see the car.
But I think at that age...(8 that is) they'd know how to lock the doors after I got out and wouldn't unlock them for anybody but ME. Yah know what I mean?

I've only left Chel in the car once, and I was outside, sitting on the rear end of the car, and the car was still on with the A/C on.

Other than that, I wouldn't leave her in the car for anything.

It's actually illegal in MD to leave your child in the car if you cannot see them.

When we were little, my dad used to send us to the car with the keys so we wouldn't "get bored" waiting through checkout. And then he'd tail it to the liquor section and buy booze when we were out of eyesight. He was awesome like that.

I knew a family where the wife had the kids asleep in the car while she ran into the convenience store on the way to pick up her husband from the airport. Someone jumped in the car and stole it with the kids in the back seat! The guy who stole the car didn't notice there were kids in it until too late, and he panicked and abandoned the car and the kids were fine, but it could have turned out much, much worse.

LOL Things sure have chaged over time huh! I always sat in the car when my mom went grocery shopping. Matter of fact if we got in trouble in public we had to go sit in the car. Oh how things change

That's what I'm afraid of. I know a lot of people think "Well I can see it so it's fine", yeah you can see someone get in your car and drive away. Or you can see someone smash in the windows and kidnap your child and you won't be able to do anything about it. I know it's probably not likely but I guess I'm just a worrywart.
