It's either/or. It all depends on your pregnancy.

It's your choice to make.
A doctor delivered my daughter, but I had a midwife in the room as well. (I had only met her that day, though. I LOVED HER!)

Im actually in this delima (spelling??)  I know with my first two labors the doctors or nurses didnt help me all that much.  Midwives will help you and they also opt for a natural birth.  Some things that doctors give you can harm your baby.  You also can walk around and move when in labor when you have a midwife.  Midwifes are also cheaper then doctors.  But it all depends on what you want.  Do you want an epidural or a natural?  Hold on and let me see if I can find out more information on the net for you...

How do you not have a choice? Then i guess who ever is on call would be in charge. Idk my mom is a mid wife and i get my care through her. neither is better than the other. But i will always see a mid wife.

Midwives are experts in normal birth and pregnancy, are trained to recognize variations from the normal, and can treat such problems or refer the woman to other specialists as needed.

      Midwives offer:
  •       personalized care
  •       longer appointments
  •       care that is up to date on the latest medical and midwifery research
  •       the same midwife caring for mother and baby throughout pregnancy,
          labor, and post-partum
  •       appropriate use of technologies

  •  Is it safe?
Numerous studies show that birth in a birth center is as safe
or safer than at a hospital if:      the woman has had a healthy pregnancy
  •       the woman is cared for by a midwife or doctor who is skilled and
experienced in out of hospital births
  •       there are hospital facilities close by which welcome women who
transfer to a hospital because they need a medical procedure

Columbia Birth Center has strict safety policies and all the emergency equipment and medications required by the State Department of Health. It is also nationally accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers. These ensure the highest standard of care for women and babies

This is from a website from a birth center around where I live that I am thinking about going to....

See I cant make up my mind if I want a midwife or a doctor.  I guess the hospital in our town is the best hospital to have babies at for some reason or another... my SIL told me about it.  She has lived here for a long time compared to me.  But I also want a midwife because, well just what you said, more personal.  I hated the bad experiences in the labor room with the people you've never met delivering your kid... They always seem to be on vacation when I go into labor...
