Energy Drinks While Breastfeeding?

posted 17th Sep '08
Is it okay? Is it harmful. Because my son seems not to react to it. I drink Red Bulls after i drop him off with the sitter. He is 12 weeks old. I pump about 2 hours afterwards. But there are some days where i drink one and nurse him like an hour later. He is never cranky or anything. But I'm just curious on everyones opinions. Thank you.

I would say YES it is harmful, considering they are dangerous for adults and have been banned in most european countries. i certainly wouldnt do it, not for the caffine (since my preemie got caffine anyway), but all the other smurf in them.

I drank redbull while breast feeding, but I waited until 2 hours after I drank it to feed Kairie.

All the caffeine would've given her explosive poops.

I drink those 5 hour energy things some times. They have as much caffeine as one cup of coffee... and then just a big shot of B vitamins. If I'm going to drink one, I'll drink it right after I nurse him... he's never seemed to act any differently.

its not okay, and i learned it the hard way, my son who slept through the night since he was born i breastfed for a few weeks before i ran out, point being i breastfed him 2 hours after i drank a monster and he was up all night screaming and crying and there was nothing i could do, and he was never like that before or after so i know it was the energy drink.
they say you can have a beer and its out of your system after two hours, wich i still wouldnt recommend doing but the energy is in your body for numeroushours, not just one or two.

YEs it takes an infant like 87 hours to get caffine out of there system!

So you'd give him a cup of coffee then since its so fine? you know only 2 cups of coffee in a day doubles the risk of miscarriage.. i mean thats hardly harmless, what makes you think it wont affect a young baby?

Theres more than vitamins in those drinks lol   they dont know the physiological affects from the mixture of ingredients, and often others (not red bull) contain alot more ingredients in them...most of which are not safe for kids.

... and yet on your profile you talk about your natural lifestyle of exclusive breastfeeding and vegan diet- not really a good fit is it

those energy drinks are horrible for people...pregnant, breastfeeding or not

I would say that a soda or some chocolate is better than those if you need the caffeine

Not really. I drank beer while I was breast feeding, I never drank beer while pregnant.

Uh where are you getting your info? The average amount of caffeine in one cup of coffee is 85mg, a can of coke has 34.5, during pregnancy, they say it's safe to consume 300mg of caffeine a day.

Don't try to scare anyone with your made up information.

Its not made up, its scientific fact. 2 cups per day doubles m/c risk - thats the most up to date statistically significant research findings. It also has bad consequences for ttc. I dont need to scare anyone, the facts speak for themselves. Perhaps you should take the time to look for up to date research rather than looking at out dated medical pamphlets, often health professionals dont keep on top of new data until national guidelines are produced. Personally i prefer to ensure the safety of my kids the best i can.

its a good general rule, most things pass to baby through breast milk as much as they do during pregnancy.

You can pump and dump when your b/fing.... but not during pregnancy, so thats pretty obvious.
