re: Energy Drinks While Breastfeeding?

Quoting twinmami:“ Its not made up, its scientific fact. 2 cups per day doubles m/c risk - thats the most up to date statistically ... [snip!] ... on top of new data until national guidelines are produced. Personally i prefer to ensure the safety of my kids the best i can.”

Yah I just researched it, one website says not to drink more than 200mg, there's STILL less than 200mg of caffeine in 2 cups of coffee.

Overall, 172 of women in the study (16.18 per cent) miscarried. Whereas 264 women reported no consumption of any drinks containing caffeine during pregnancy, 635 women (60 per cent) reported consuming between 0-200 mg of caffeine a day, and 164 women drank 200 mg or more. Other risk factors for miscarriage were also accounted for in the study, which found that miscarriage was associated with consumption of caffeine overall, rather than particular drinks.

Those statistics are average miscarriage rates as it is, it's said that 1 in 6 women miscarry.

When I got pregnant, I was encouraged to drink caffeine because the lack thereof made me get insane migraines. Your information isn't totally right, no one can REALLY determine the reason someone miscarried in the first trimester.

The study says nothing about age, health background, activity levels or ANYTHING else. They can't base findings on that alone.

Maybe you should stop using google as an answerpad and get real facts, factor in all the conditions, not just what the woman was drinking.

I never pumped and dumped. I drank beer while Kairie was in bed, then when I got up in the morning I fed her like normal.

This is the truth!

Pumping and dumping is ineffective. It won't cause the alcohol or whatever else to be filtered out of your breastmilk any faster.

lmao i dont use google ( like you did), i read journals and books. I didnt say that was the cause of m/c, i said its been shown to double the risk, from around roughly 13% to 25% in most cases. The figures for TTC are similarly shocking.

And i never have pumped and dumped, mine were born 3 months premature so breast milk was a life saver to my son, so i haven't had to research wasting it. But its use is not to filter out the alcohol, its to maintain supply in the times you cannot feed.

What books are these?

I know what the beer is used for, it's what I drank for. My supply was diminishing so I drank beer. I didn't pump and dump, I fed it allllll to my kid.

According to the Breastfeeding Answer Book (LLLI 2003, p. 599-600), excessive caffeine consumption by the mother (more than 750 mL per day) can result in a baby who shows signs of caffeine stimulation.

Breastfeeding is NOT the same as when you're pregnant, fyi.
And you keep talking about it doubling your chances of miscarriage... Last I checked, my womb is without a tenant.

Ive no concern for the current contents of your womb thanks, im showing an example of the effect of caffine. I gave a balanced view and also stated that my 1 lb baby was given caffine in hospital.

The good news is that although caffeine gets into your milk quickly and takes a long time to excrete, it rarely causes problems for breastfed babies. Most studies have found the levels in newborns to be very small, and often undetectable. Each cup of coffee contains about 100-150 mg of caffeine. The amount of caffeine in five cups of coffee per day (less than 750 ml) has not been shown to cause problems for most mothers and babies. Mothers who consume 8 or 9 cups a day, or more than 750 ml have sometimes noticed that their babies are fussy and don't sleep well. If you think your baby is sensitive to caffeine, try cutting down over the course of a week by substituting caffeine free beverages for what you usually drink. Abrupt withdrawal from caffeine can cause headaches.

There is more than just caffine in energy drinks, its their documented effects and the unknown of certain mixes which cause concern.
