Don't know what to do.....

posted 13th Sep '08
Ascher was started mostly on formula in the hospital - we couldn't get him to latch, or if he did, he didn't stay too long - since we came home on day three, he has been 98% bfed. I would only supplement with an ounce or two when he wouldn't stop crying and rooting all over the place....

So, now he's 14 days old..... and had big tummy problems this afternoon, was screaming and pulling his legs in and arching his back...from what I've read, usually means gas pain....so....gave mylicon, and he calmed right down...15min later, BIG poop....

I have the exact brand they used in the hospital, but he wanted more food after pooping, so I gave him 2oz..... for the first time in three days...... and he had thick, mucousy, kinda chunky spit-up....the formula was freshly made....

Is it the mylicon that did that?? Or should I be considering to supplement with a soy based one?? Or was this a freakish one time thing??

I didn't tolerate milk-based formula as a baby... is it possible that he suddenly developed a reaction to it?? He already doesn't like the taste.....I don't like the thought of giving him something that makes his tummy hurt....

Thanks in advance - my pedi doesn't have an answering service as of yet...it's a new office....

same thing happened to me when i came home from the hospital..except he was just being BF through bottle. but the hospital gave us similac advance..and as far as i know most newborn babies cant really tolerate it that well..coming right out and being given that..its raare you find a baby who starts on it and stays on it..i know mine couldnt! he was in SO much pain..all it really took was a sensitive formula and there was a 360 turn around. hes much better now and 100% formula

The Mylicon could very well have caused him to spit up. If it was mucousy, though, he could have had some drainage...spitting up is baby's way of getting it out. If it was a one time thing, then no reason to change formulas, but if he does that every time he has the formula, then it might be something to discuss with your pedi. Soy formula should only be used as a last resort, so since he is only getting formulaonce in a great while, I would just keep an eye on him when he does get it. If you do end up needing to switch, though, try a lactose-free formula, or one that is made with the whey proteins more broken down already (Gentlease, Goodstart, etc).

Thank you!!!

I'm arguing with gramma about weather he could suddenly develop a reaction two weeks into it.... and it is, of course, simlac advance.... Good thing I get to go home tomorrow.... get to feed him what I want -(we are totally going straight to the store and getting something soy based)instead of arguing with her about it....

And, it's not like I'm giving up on bfing - it's just that he's a piggy - my milk is more than abundant some days, and others he wants more than I have....

I'm not doing mylicon at every feeding - it was just once.... and I let him stay on until I'm sure there is nothing coming out of either side - (via hand expression) sometimes it's 40 min each side..... and switching back and forth for a couple hours....they just give up sometimes.... And, this last time, it was an hour and a half after his last marathon bf session...I tried and tried, both sides gave me nothing...so he got formula, and I drank a big glass of juice, a big glass of water, and had a sandwich....

I'll make sure to keep an eye on it though!!!

And, mommybrain....I was thinking about goodstart too - my friends son was horribly constipated until he started on that kind...   Not that mine is constipated, but I do remember how much happier Christian was after he was switched!!
