chicken pox/shingles

posted 9th Sep '08
ok, i recently found out that someone i was hanging out with found out her dad has shingles. I have never had chicken pox, and my dr gave me a vaccine for it like 5 or 6 years ago. But a couple weeks ago i noticed some marks on my body that took awhile for them to go away, and I didnt think anything of it. Then I mentioned it to my cousin and her friend. Thats when her friend told me she just found out about her dad. Well I got concerned becuase i'm 27 weeks pregant and have never had it, so i called my dr and still have not heard back from her. Now my son has some bumps on his legs, and we have him set up for a dr. appointment tomorrow. My question is, i have heard that since I have had the vaccine, it does not pose a risk to me or the baby.....and i heard that since the friend had chicken pox when she was younger she can not transmit it to us. What is your take on it? I have been really worried, and my dr is in surgery and is really busy so thats why i have not heard from her.

Chicken pox cannot be caught from shingles and if it could - you would have to be in direct contact with the puss from inside the blisters to catch it - shingles is not airborne - you should be just fine .

Another inportant thing to note about chicken pox is it always begins on the torso (front and back) - if it is chicken pox - placing the child in a warm bath will often bring out the spots so you'll know for sure after the kiddo has a bath.

With my last pregnancy I thought I had been exposed to it so I called the doctor they said as long as I had either had the chicken pox I was ok. I had them as a child so they said I was ok. I worry about my husband because he didnt have chicken pox at all as a child so if any of our kids get them then he more than likely will get chicken pox/shingles....

With chicken pox the afflicted people show a high fever and vomiting before the blisters emerge and break.

I've had shingles and it is excruciatingly painful. They are bumps on your back from the spine around one side of your body to the waist.

I woke up one morning thinking my ribs were broken. Shingles is aggrivated nerve endings under the skin that have become inflamed. It really is horrible. I was in pain for3 months and it can reoccur when I am stressed.

If someone has had chicken pox and it was a decent case then they can't get it again. If they had a very weak case of chicken pox then it can reoccur.

If you have been vaccinated for chicken pox then you can't get it. You're safe ^_^

You ahve to come in direct contact with the person with shingles to get chicken pox from it. My mom had it during our visit with her, I have had chicken pox so I had no worries and my son has had 2 does of the vaccine and we did not contract it, we were with her for 18 days. It is not airborn like chicken pox but it is the same virus and if you come in contact with someone with it you can get it but I think you are safe. Talk to you doctor to be reassured.

Actually chicken pox can be caught from shingles. I know because I worked in a nursing home for 2 years and they seem to be kind of popular. Anyways we were always told that if we were pregnant or have never had chicken pox to never go near the room of the person with the shingles. You CAN get them even if you have had chicken pox BUT it is less likely. When you are pregnant and you get shingles, the baby has a very high chance of getting chicken pox which can cause complications, sometimes miscarriage

Did you know you can et it on your face also ?? That would be pure hell - not that shingles aren't bad enough on the torso - my husband had them for a couple of months last year - it was awful .

Here in canada they have recently released a vaccine for Shingles for elderly people only over age 60 can receive it at this time though.

If you've NEVER had the chicken pox thats when you are at risk - otherwise you can't catch it .
My husband had shingles when Abbey was around 2 months old - the only precaution the doctor said to take was to make sure we didn't use the same towels for hubby and baby - you have to be in direct contact with the puss to catch it if you have not had chicken pox.

Yep only if they come in direct contact with the grossness inside the blisters .. not airborne

Jesus, my doc never told me.

Pfft Fuck that, having them on my back and side was bad enough

Shingles are just plain evil. At the moment I have.. 6 days to pack, clean and move 3,000km's away and I am trying soooo hard not to stress out so they don't flare up.

I missed a lot of work because of it because I was a disabled carer and many of my clients had low immune systems so there was no way in hell I could expose them to it.

I wouldn't vaccinate my kids against chicken pox until they are older.. but shingles.. hell yes I would do it tomorrow if I could. The fact that it reoccurs is so scary. I almost break out by me worrying about them breaking out D:

I hate it
