CERN & The End Of The World?

posted 5th Sep
Not sure how many have read this article, but here is a link:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/2650665/Legal-bid-to-stop-CERN-atom-smasher-from-destroying-the-world.html

Now, my question is, for all you debaters, do you believe this machine, the Large Hadron Collider should be allowed to be turned on Sept. 10th or not used at all? Do you think it could be the end of the world?
(Not trying to cause drama, just recently read this article and want to know what others think as well.)

This is the first I've heard about it...

It really makes me kind of nervous. Why do we have to keep doing crap like this? I don't like testing out things like this when there is no guarantee that there'll be a positive outcome. Why the hell would we want to create a 'black hole' on earth?!

i don't think it will be the "End of the World" but it could have some pretty bad consequences.

Well it "can" create mini black holes. CERN has said this. The only thing is that some scientists believe the black holes will continue to grow uncontrollably and swallow up the earth. I didn't really mean to scare anyone, heh. Just thought I'd post this as not too many people know about it. Especially living in the US, as this is a project currently in the UK.

I read about this a while ago...i was hoping it wouldn't be able to operate.

That's the thing. If there's no guarantee, and it 'can' create mini black holes, why would they WANT to try that? What if they fuck up big time and these 'mini' black holes turn out to not be so 'mini'? Sounds to me like they need to do some more research on black holes.

No they don't need to do that! So they can know for a few moments/years, whatever, for their own curiousity? Then we will all be dead and it won't even freakin matter. I don't think it's a risk that should be taken.

I agree. I'm all for science and everything, but this just seems like too big of a risk. They're not only testing something they have no clue what the outcome will be, but its a threat to humankind. I don't mean to be close-minded or anything... This just scares the shit out of me.

Well CERN researchers said it was 100% 'safe' yet it can still possibly create mini-black holes. To be quite honest, I am afraid of this machine. But think of the possibilities. If it doesn't do anything bad, they can learn the secrets of the world or so they say. It's amazing what kind of knowledge could be gained from this project. I'm hoping that if they do allow it to be turned on, that nothing bad comes of it. Scary, huh.

Me too...ALL of our lives will be at risk.....

I'm just wondering why they need this knowledge so bad......and if it can possibly create mini-black holes it isn't safe........but that's JMO.

I mean if it was just their lives they were putting at stake, that's one thing, but everyones life will be at stake. And all the knowledge in the world isn't going to matter if we are all dead. But that's jmo.

They really don't. But they believe it to be 100% safe. I'm not sure. I'd love to know the information ( though it would take years to collect due to how incredibly tiny the atoms are ) if there we're no risks such as oh I don't know black holes eating up the earth. Heh.
