Ignorance really is bliss -hurricane evacuations-

This was posted on another message board I'm a part of...
OP-
so my best friend just told me that people that had to evacuate from new orleans from hurricane Gustav are now complaining cause they have no money to get back home. doesn't this just piss u off? she said she saw a family that paid 60 dollars for a hotel and now have no money when the shelters were free...i swear those people love complaining...just like katrina when half the people wouldn't leave ahead of time, yet complained when they couldn't get help right away. these people just piss me off, seriouly, use ur brain. no money to get home? use the freakin free shelter, hurricane coming? evacuate. durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
one specific reply-
I def think you have a point.
I also don't think everything should be handed to them...just like we shouldn't have nationalized hurricane insurance. It isnt my FAULT,you decided to move and have a house right in hurricane lane.I, therefore, should not be paying for your stupidty in building a house.I live in VA Beach now and we have 'Hurricane Evacuation Route' signs everywhere. The streets are notorious for flooding here.
I thought it was FREAKIN NICE of the local/state/federal authorities to get buses and trains, and possibly plane rides for people.2 million people were evacuated.
Either way,it seems like the people down there just don't know when the charity ends and they need to work on saving money for emergencies.
I have been poor, and I have been raised in a poor household. We never went without clothes, food,or a good shower. My parents found a way to make do.some people need a reality check. My Mom also went to night school, raised 3 kids, and worked 2 jobs.
Most all of the other replies agreed with the OP.
Now, here's my reply...
Well for one, most shelters weren't opened until AFTER the storm hit this time. They just opened two shelters in my Parish YESTERDAY. It's for people who want to return home, but have either a) no home to return to or b) a home in an unlivable condition to return to.
Secondly, I would NEVER stay in a shelter for a storm. Horrible things happen to people while in those shelters; rape, murder, robbery, molesting of young kids. I would not put my family in that kind of situation. I would spend my last penny on a hotel room somewhere and pray for the best when trying to get home.
Thirdly, most people can't get home right now, not only for lack of funds but b/c there are very few gas stations open in the entire state and most don't have any gas at all! Tell me, how do you plan on driving your car without gas?
RiffRandal- I'm sorry, but in a situation like that the government has to step up and take care of its people. Not everyone has a vehicle or means of transportation to get themselves out. Most people that used the buses and trains had to WALK miles from their homes to be able to get there.
&People shouldn't be living in hurricane prone areas? Seriously? That's like telling people in California they shouldn't live there b/c of earthquakes! At least we can predict the hurricanes coming. So, people are supposed to move completely off the Southeast and Gulf coasts b/c of the ONE major storm every couple years that could destroy their homes? That's ridiculous.
Opinions?

I think that if you live in a area where there is a chance you might EVER have to evacuate, you should have a savings account set up for that. Plan for the worse, now most people probably had a evacuation kit prepared, right? Why not have a extra $100 bucks stuck in there as well in case you cant get to a atm. You should have money set aside for this! Now i understand that people can not save money bc they live paycheck to paycheck. But i still think that if you dont want to stay in a shelter then you can maybe cut back on something so that you can have extra money to put back!

IAM WITH YOU..THEY TELL YOU TO LEAVE UIT PEOPLE DONT WANT TO LISTEN..UT WHEN THERE IN TROULE..ITS TO LATE...AND THEN THEY START SAYING THEY DIDNT WANT TO HELP US..IM FROM CALIFORNIA..WE HAVE FIRES..WHEN THEY THEY TELL US TO EVACUATE..WE PACK UP AND LEAVE..BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY..

I think this is why people should save money. You never know what happens. People depend on the GVT for way too much. Your choice to live there, save your money for emergencies

i wasnt evact. but my husband was..he works in reserve, la...but i personally think anyone that wants to live in a "bowl" (new or. is below sea level) should expect some flooding and other weather issuses..they should have money set back for problems like hurricanes.. they choose to live there.. so why should we give them money to get out..they will just go right back and we will just have to give them more money when the next storm comes.. BTW during katrinamy family and iwere with out power for 3 weeks and we didnt complain at all.. we knew the storm was coming and had time to get everything together.. i mean if you watch the news they warn you about it like a week or so a head of time.. even if they dont know right were the storm will hit they can tell you the general area...

my heart goes out to the families that have to go through that and the situation of people not living there....there are mother nature tradgidies EVERYWHERE i live here in kansas and we have tornadoes last winter we had a ice storm that we were out of power for 17 days........ we could of gone to the shelter but i think that the shelters are for the elderly and the young because they really need the heat people my age can survive better than the elderly and people like that!!!!!

Just like you should have flood insurance if you live in flood prone areas. If you can't afford the extra insurance, then you should consider living somewhere else.

Every year when the hurricane season starts I buy water and canned food to be set aside for storms and we save so much out of every pay check for storm funds. People living in these areas know what can happen and should be prepared for it.

definitely!! I used to live by Galveston, TX. My dad had all kinds of insurances he needed and put money aside for that. You provide for your family, Be smart and be safe!

i completely agree with you. I was born in New York and left to NC when I was 18, had my children and have lived in the south ever since. I'm currently in TX and would never go back. The schools are alot better here and my kids are safer here. So even though we might get a hurricane I'm not leaving til I'm forced to and if we aren't prepared for it then I would hope the gov would help out. It's mother nature not you partying with a pool in your living room that destroyed everything you own. BIG DIFFERENCE!!

Wow.
I think I am speechless at the ignorance of those people.
Wow. My head hurts with all the things I want to say but can't put into words right now.

im gonna have to agree with most. if you live somewhere where you are gonna get hit by a natural disaster...you should be prepared. i mean we have tornados all the time but we never see any kind of help like hurricane people do. we can't really evaccuate either because we have no idea which way the tornado will go. i understand that govt does need to take care of their people but there's got to be a line where people need to step up for themselves.

It just sucks that the government has to help those people that stole all the shit from the stores too.

There are natural disasters everywhere. I pay out the ass for my homeowners insurance.
I don't think you should stop living in destruction zones b/c of storms. To me that is like never flying again after 9/11.
You can't live in fear.
But then agian, I can afford to evacuate, and rebuild. I believe I live in paradise. Storms and the preparation come with the privilage of living in such a beautiful area.
I am really curious as to why these people think they are paying for us to live in hurricane prone areas? Last I checked I paid a very large insurance premium every year, and my name was the only one listed on the bill!
