But I don't want to!!! (INDUCTION)

posted 2nd Sep
At my last Dr. appointment last week my dr brought up the idea of an induction. I was only 38 weeks at the time with no complications so i really don't know why. My due date is Sunday and she says if i don't have my baby before then we'll schedule an induction. BUT I am completely against induction. For so many reasons. The main reason, i think, is because my sister had an induction and it was horrific. Everybody keeps trying to tell me it isn't that bad but statisticaly 50% of inductions end in c-section and i have a BAD feeling about all of it. Last Wed. she checked i was 1cm dilated and 50% effaced and i've been having contractions on my own. I'm wondering what were your induction experiences like and how can i possibly help my labor start on its own. She is talking about stripping my membanes and i don't want that either. i just want everything to happen naturally without any interventions..

also my baby hasnt dropped at all...she is head down but still high up..so i still ight need a c-section. are c-sections really bad?

I'm not very educated about this, however while looking for a doula (birth coach), she talked about how induction is not always necessary even when a doctor suggests it. Maybe you could talk to the doctor about how you feel and let him/her know that unless there is a dire medical reason, you would prefer things to happen naturally.

i dont think it is because of the induction that they wind up w/c-sections. I think doctors are SO MUCH more prone to doing a c-sec even without induction.

I was induced, my labor was only 4-1/2 hours and i didnt have a c-section. one of my girlfriends wasnt induced and wound up w/an emergency c-section, so either way, it could happen.

MOST doctors will ONLY do it if/when necessary.

EDITED TO ADD: I DID NOT have the EPI either. My contractions were pretty bad, but I have only had ONE child, so I don't know what they would feell like IF i didnt get induced.

My friend Donia was induced, and had to get a cesarean.. but she wasnt dialating or anything on her own.
I was induced, and gave birth naturally.. and I was 4cm dialated when I got to the hospital.
To me, it seems like theres a bit of a connection there.. but Im not really sure. Was your sister dialating on her own at all?

is there a medical reason why he cant wait til your 41wks?

i was induced and my induction was fine 10hrs from start til i was done..well minus the pushing. wasnt bad at all...but i will NEVER be induced again unless medically needed, it makes contractions much more intense than natural ones.

when do you see him next? can you just ask to be induced maybe 5days after your DD? especially if there is no need he shouldnt force an induction on you yet.

With my first one i was set to go in and be induced but went into labor the night before all natural. But my second pregnancy i went in and was induced with no pain medication of anything. Yes the contractions were a little more intense but you just have to stay calm and relaxed. I had my bf on one side and mother on the other side fanning me off with papers lol and a cold wet rag on my forehead. I kept my eyes shut the whole entire time and tried not talking at all cause then i would lose focus and have to start all over again. But if you focus on someone talking in the room if you can get them to just keep talking it always helps or have some music playing or the tv. But about 30 min after being induced i was holding my little girl
I wish you the best of luck and hope that things turn out the way that you want them to be. But if you do have to be induced don't worry mama . People make things out to be worse then what they actually are.

I was induced and ended up having to have a C-Section....my doc thought my son was going to be alot bigger than he ended up being....so they gave me until my due date, and since he didn't come I went in and was induced....He ended up coming with his head cocked to the side and got stuck....I believe that if I hadn't been induced and he had time to manuver into the birth canal on his own, that he probaby would have presented a little better, and maybe I wouldn't have had to have a C-Section...only God really knows though...

THe doc can't make you get induced if you tell her you don't want to. If she pushes it then don't go in to the hospital until your in labor. My second child was induced and it was because the doc wanted to keep her own scheduled time off. I would never let that happen this time. It's why i went with a midwife. Not only will i not get induced but she's writing an order that i don't have to where the doppler strapped to my belly. I hated not being able to move around. Also no one's going to be telling me when to push or when not to. I know my body will let me know.

yeah my son was 9lbs too.. he got stuck.. but I still delivered him. I had to sign a waiver so they could use the forceps. The contractions were pretty crazy though.. I had to get an epidural because I couldnt handle them.
You are dialating on your own so I'm sure you will be fine, and besides.. if they decide that have to give you a c-section.. theres probably a very good reason. I doubt they WANT to cut you open if they dont have to.

You just named the 2 things that really pissed me off when I had my daughter. They wouldnt let me walk around, and the nurse kept telling me not to push. I did anyway, and she came out. As if you can not push when youre at that point.. like really lol
That was off topic sorry but you just reminded me. They better not harass me like that this time.

The only medical reason for induction is if you are past 42 weeks or if the baby is in some sort of distress or if the mom can't physically handle natural labor. Don't let your doctor push you into anything. Many times, it's easier for them to induce you and bring the baby in on their schedule, but you don't have to agree to that. Just let you doctor know how you feel and that you want to wait. It's your body, your baby, and your choice!

Just wanted to add that it is important that you don't push utnil you are a full 10 cm dialted. This could be the reason others were told not to push yet. If you aren't fully dialated it can cause the cervix to swell and you'll have a heck of a time getting that baby out. My sister pushed before she was at 10cm and went through 16 hours of labor with the baby just pushing against the cervix but not going anywhere. They had to do a c-section.
