Breastfeeding and pacifiers....

posted 1st Sep '08
What do you mommas recommend about giving your breastfeeding babe a paci? My little one will be 1 week old tomorrow and sometimes I feel like she just needs to be soothed and maybe sucking on a pacifier would help... Originally I had thought to wait until she is about a month old bc I REALLY don't want to mess her up withgetting the whole breastfeeding thing down. What did you do?

I don't beleive in pacifiers.. i dont' see the point in putting something in a babies mouth just to shut them up.

I don't think pacifires are a good idea whether you're breastfeeding or not, jmo.

I don't see the point in that either, but that is not why I would use one....

Why even give her one?

The SCBU gave my daughter one when she was newborn I hated it,I;m glad she spat it out at 2 months and wont take another one.

I've heard a couple different things about it... But I was told by my doctor and a nurse who comes to visit me that you should wait until your milk supply is regular and you're well established at breastfeeding and everything is going well before starting any type of pumping or giving pacifiers. Hope that helps.

Like I had mentioned, I feel like it would soothe her at times....she seems like she just wants to suck. I know it soothed my son when he was an infant. (he wasn't breastfed so we gave him one right away) It also helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

I wanted to wait until he was a month old before I gave him a paci also. But my boobs just couldn't take it anymore, so I caved around 2 weeks.

I don't get why people are so against it. Unlike a finger, you can take it away when you don't want them to have it anymore.

Some not all babies have a strong need to suck. not nurse just suck. it's a calming action to them. It's not just to shut them up. some are soothed by the act of sucking.

Elliot didn't get a paci before 2 weeks. Piper got one on day one at the hospital but, she hasn't had any nipple confusion

I just don't really see the point in them. I allowed Will to suck on me all he wanted. I knew at times it was more for comfort than for feeding, but I honestly didn't care. It was soothing to both of us and he never developed a habbit of sucking his thumb
