Why did this happen??

posted 30th Aug
Ok i am 21 weeks tomorrow and last when i was sleeping i woke up with these incrediably bad cramps in both my calves. I couldnt even flex or point my feet.I know sometimes when u stretch u cramp up, but i wasnt stretching and this pain was way worse. This had never happened to me before and i was just wondering if this was normal?

I told my mom about it and she said that it happened to her a few times when she was pregnant.

I was scared that maybe i was cutting off blood or oxygen to the baby. (Idk if thats stupid to think) but i know we are supposed to sleep on our left side and stay off our back, however i do wake up a few times in the middle of the night and i find myself on my back...could this have anything to do with it? Please if anyone has any answers or has expierenced this before, let me know whats going on bc it freaked me out! Thanks!!

it is normal. Drink more water and when they come point your feet straight up kind of flexing them it hurts but helps

This happens to me all the time....sometimes it wakes me up at night! It also happened with my other pregnancies, the baby is ok, it's just painful for you! Make sure you're drinking enough water and getting enough of your electrolytes (potassium, calcium, etc...) try a warm bath, stretching and massage. Unfortunately it's a common occurence in pregnancy!

I would get cramps every single night that i would even hate the thought of going to sleep. What i did was eat a banana and drink milk b4 bed and that helped a little. My baby would also massage my calves with cream or icy hot (not to much though) b4 i would go to bed that seemed to help. Hope all works out for you.

Someone just recently warned me that leg cramps do happen when you're prego, so I wouldn't worry about it. I haven't had them yet.

you mean like a "charlie horse"? i get those all the time (before, during, and after pregnancy). i had one so bad a few weeks ago that i couldn't walk when i tried to get out of bed. my sister said to eat bananas. my mom said to drink more water, and put a bar of soap at the end of your bed. i know it sounds silly, but she said put a bar of soap (any kind) between the sheets at the foot of your bed. she swears this works and she doesn't get them anymore. good luck!

More calcium and more water! It's part of the joys of pregnancy to get charlie horses, but you might need some hydration and make sure you are taking in enough calcium.

Mine cramp if I'm on my back for too long, were you sleeping on your back? Also the weight that you gain can affect your legs. all part of pregnancy. You could have restless leg syndrom too, i hear a lot of women get it while pregnant.
