My son & I have been visiting family in New Mexico for a week now. My husband had a 4 day weekend, so he thought he would make the 8-9 hour drive after work on Thursday to join us.
At 2 am, Charlie (my son) unexplainedly woke up & would NOT go back to sleep. He was playing around & grabbed my phone. He calledJames (my husband)at 2:34 am (MST)...smart baby!...& was like "Hi Da-da". We were on the phone for about a minute & a half when I just hear my husband shrieking & screaming. I frantically ask, "James, are you there? James, can you hear me? James, talk to me!" Nothing...
I hung up & dialed 911. Our local dispatcher didn't know the area that my husband was in (mountainous), but all I can picture is my husband careening down the side of a mountain. I told the dispatcher it wasbetween Ruidoso & Roswell NM.
"He's dead...it's all my fault." That is all I could think. I pulled myself together & I prayed. I tried recalling him a thousand times...he wouldn't answer.
*From James' view* He turned a corner & bam! There was a huge black bull. He only had a split second to step on the brake & try to protect his head with his arm. (air bags deployed) It took the bull out at the knees, through the windshield & up over the back of the car--pulling my roof back.
James pulled the car to the side (in case somebody came around the corner & couldn't see him), crawled out the broken window, & began trying to wave down semi-trucks. No one would stop, so he went the other side of my car & dialed 911...not knowing exactly where he was (60 mile stretch of windy roads).Thedispatcher was trying to get the most local person but wasn't for sure. Finally, two people drove up (an ex-firefighter & an RN), & they took control--the husband told 911 the mile marker, the wife made a splint, & they waited.
* Back to my view* I didn't hear from anyone for 5 minutes. I knew he was dead...Charlie was going to grow up without a daddy. He didn't deserve that! He needed his daddy...I needed his daddy!
Finally, the local dispatcher called back & said he was "ok" but wouldn't tell me what it meant. Finally, James called me--to hear is voice was pure elation! I was so excited. He was in so much pain, but I was glad he could feel it! It meant he was alive!
So he got 3 broken bones in his left arm (his right arm would've been gone if he had not been on the phone--Go Charlie!) & some cuts on his head. He is going to get pins in his arms.

So many people commented on how it was a miracle that anyone walked away alive from this car....
Thanks for letting my share!
