I Know There's A BFing Thread..Buuut..[Mini Vent/Question]

posted 28th Aug
It's 330 pages long..sorry if I'm being lazy, but I just can't look through all those pages to help with my question.

It's KILLING ME to BF Ian.
When he first latches on I have to cover my mouth to keep from screaming. I'm reading stuff from parents.com and I have this little mini nursing book I got from the hospital, but the only conclusion I can get is he's latching on wrong.
But when he latches on, [well for the most part] my whole nipple and aerola are in his mouth, and that's how they both say he has to be, it just hurts. Like, really bad!
After he's been on there for a few seconds it's ok, but I don't think it's supposed to be as painful as it is when we start. I don't know what to do, it's getting to the point where I just want to give him the formula the hospital gave us..because it hurts that bad, but I feel like a bad mom for wanting to give up so easily..
Everytime I feed him I use the cradle hold, because the football hold just doesn't work for us [we've tried a couple times in the hospital] and I'm scared to do the side lying position for some reason..are there any suggestions from anyone as to how I can make this feel ANY better? I honestly dread him waking up sometimes because it just hurts..idk what to do anymore this sucks.

Aww i know how you feel momma, I was in the hospital for a week and was bf'ing and was doing it correctly, and i was miserable and in terrible pain, my nipples were sore and cracked and they even started scabbing so i had to take him off for a while, I started pumping and it was 10 times better, but pumping wasn't enough and my nipples were so scabbed and torn up i finally just had to use formula and have been mix feeding ever since. I pump at night, breastfeed in the morning and formula feed at night, I felt terrible at first that i was giving my little guy formula so soon but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes....I'd say just pump until your nipples are healed and do both, pump and bf

It hurt like hell for the first few seconds when I nursed my son, but that stopped hurting after about a week or so. I think your nipples just have to get used to it, I know it sucks. Don't give up though it gets better, the only thing that helped me was that after each feeding I put neosporin with pain relief on my nipples and it numbed them you just have to remember to wipe it off before you nurse again but if I didn't have it I don't think I could have made it through the first couple of weeks. I have been nursing my son for 16 months now trust me it gets better it just sucks in the beginning

Oh mama its only been 4 days!! They say that garbage that if there is pain you arent doing it right..... WHATEVER. I hurt really badly for about a week and a half. And then.... nothing at all! Sometimes I cant even tell when she has stopped nursing until I look down. It gets sooooooooo much better. I'm now at 5 months and going strong. I promise you - stick it out a month and you will be amazed how easy and great it is. If he is latching that wide and not breaking suction then you will be fine before you know it!

Although on the flip side I wont preach to you that you're a bad mom if you quit. You have to do whats right for you and your baby. If you are hating motherhood because of that ONE thing then change it! Bottom line is food is food

Just so you know that when you offer a bottle even if it is pumped breast milk any time before the child is one month(or a pacifier) it can cause nipple confusion. It can make then have an incorrect latch

I REALLY need to get a pump. I want one so bad..I honestly feel like that's the only way he'll be able to get milk from me.
My nipples are really sore, and when he's finished they're all red and look like they're bleeding..the first day I came home, I literally peeled skin off my nipples after he ate.
I've only gave him formula twice since I wanna say yesterday morning..I started writing down the times I started feeding him and the time I stopped, and which side I used, so I would remember to feed him every so often. I wanna go to formula, but I feel like I haven't given BFing a chance..

Sowould yourecommend I stop BFing and use formula, and once I get a pump switch back to breastmilk? I feel like that's what I have to do, at least until I cant get more help..

I've heard that..because my mom bought Ian a NUK pacifer, and I asked a nurse if she would suggest me using it, because he sucks on his fingers when he's awake..and she said it should be fine, but I still think that might be a reason..which is another reason why I feel bad that I can't get him to latch on..I dont wanna give him formula, I at least wanted togive BFing a shot..

For me it does in the beginning, but I asked my friend, and she said it doesn't hurt her at all..so I can't really tell you anything, just my point of view..lol

Are you on WIC? Iknow this is a personal question no need to ask just letting you know they will help you with BFing problems. Or contact La Leche leaugue.

That's why I kinda feel bad, because I haven't been BFing that long..I'm hoping I'm like you and it gets better..

Yea I've read that and talked to the Pedi about it too, but if your in that much pain and can't deal..then like i said...you gotta do what you gotta do...all babies are different, my son has no problem distinguishing my nipples from his bottles, he sucks like a champ...lol

Yeah, I'm on WIC..my next appointments not until the middle of September..my mom went in on Tuesday and they immeadiately gave her an appointment and wouldn't even see her..I hate them. But hopefully if it doesn't get better, then I'm gonna ask once I get there..

Yea the hospital gave me a manual pump and i've just been using that, i don't mind it, plus if you have to buy one they are cheaper, if youra little strapped for cash. Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? I would and see what they say...I know I did what i felt i needed to do and talked to the pedi and he said it wascompletely fine, and my son is completely healthy and fine, BF is always the best option but don't let anyone make you feel bad or tell you your doing the wrong thing if you can't for now...I definitely wouldn't give up on it and try as much as you can to do it though =0)

I see his pedi on the 2nd..I'm gonna talk to him about it then..uggh I wish my hospital would have gave me one..=/ they gave me this Enfamil diaper bag with all this BFing stuff, like books and ice packs, but no pump..which is what I was hoping for..I need to find out where to get a cheap one..
