Short cervix

posted 27th Aug '08
My doctor diagnosed me with a short cervix (3cm) a couple of weeks ago and put me on bed rest. I went back for a check up today and my cervix is now 2.5 cm. I will be 26 weeks pregnant tomorrow. So, I am still on strict bed rest for the time being.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. If so, what was the outcome?

I also had a short cervix..but throughout my pregnancy it got better. The shortest it was was 2.6 but it did get up to 3cm. I was on bedrest the last 4 months of my pregnancy, but they didn't have to sew me up. I had Mase at 38 weeks c-section

Mine was 2.5 from 25 weeks till the last time they checked it at 36. I had surgery on my cervix a few years before so that is what happened because of that. I was on light duty at work, 4 hours, and just take it easy. I went to my due date
Have they done a fetal fibronectin test on you? That can determine if you are going to deliver soon.

I was in preterm labour at 29 wks and my cervix was short but I hadn't yet started to dialate. I was put on strict bedrest cuz in addition to the risk of preterm labour I also had a previa. I was never talked to again about my cervix so I'm guessing that I either got better or at least never got worse. I do know that when I eventually had my son at full term I had to have an epesiotomy because I was one of those weird people who was dialating without my cervix effacing (shortening).

No, they haven't done that test. I go for a check up every week and I also go weekly for progesterone shots.

I had a cervical cerclage put in at16 weeks with this pregnancydue to preterm labor I had last year at 20 weeks. And a week after my cerclage was put in, I had my cervix measured and it measured 4.4 and little by little it has gotten shorter and shorter. Right now I am measuring 1.7. And my doctor is pretty sure I will dialate right away when I get the stitches taken out. That's in 2 weeks, which I will be 36 weeks. My doctor has given me my steriod shots and I still continue to get my progestrone shots every week. So if my little man is born at 36 weeks his lungs would be fully develope. Oh yeah I get my cervix measured every thursday. Good luck.

Thanks ladies!! I'm just hoping that I can go full term. My doc said it isn't short enough for a cerclage and I hope I don't have to do that. I'm not dilated and I'm not having contractions so I'm hopeful.

Yeah it's a little too late to do a cerclage. Im not sure they even would attempt it that far along. But my doctor has given me Procardia to help the uterus from contracting. You should talk to your doctor about that.

When I went in for my 20 week ultrasound I was found to have a cervical length of 1.5cm. I had an emergency cerclage placed the following monday. I am am complete strict bedrest and have gone into preterm labor 2x. I'm 28 weeks now and yesterday I had my monthly ultrasound to measure cervical length and it was all the way to 4cm!!! YIPPEEE!!! In my opinion bedrest really can help if you stick to it. I take pills every 4 hours also for they contractions I have but they don't work for shit. I have contractions all day but my doc says my cervix isn't changing so just come in if something feels wrong or my water breaks. I think I'm gonna end up going overdue and the whole time until then having contractions every four min for the next 12 weeks!!! Sounds like fun!! Oh well, I'd rather go through all this than have him this early.
