Low Protein Levels

My friend just called and said she has to go see a high risk doctor Tuesday. She said her blood work came back and the doctor informed her that her protein level is low. Since she was partially listening to what he said she did not hear the cause of having low protein.

Do you ladies know what having a "low protein level" mean and what are the risk to the baby?
