Babyshower Dilemma

posted 26th Aug
So, my mom wants to throw me a baby shower. She lives about an hour from where I live. All of the people I know would want to come live out near me. She wants to have it at her house, so that means everyone would have to drive an hour to be relatively bored and give me things. I feel very guilty about having it out there, like I would be putting everyone out. My mom had the option of having it at my friend's house out here, but she said she would be uncomfortable doing it at someone else's house.

I don't know if I should just forget about having one all together, or ask people to drive that far.

I think you should really try to negotiate with her on the location. Even though she is doing you a big favor, it is YOUR baby shower and it would mean a lot to you if your friends came to it y'know? Your gonna have to talk her into it without making her feel too bad. How about your place?

No i would tell mom no thats crazy she is one person. She can go easier than everyone else. I would tell her to come to you. And if she doesnt like it ask your friend to throw it instead!

I'm from a town that's a little more than an hour from where I live....
And I'm just having two.
One in my hometown, and one here, with my NEW friends and family.
That way no one feels left out because they can't make the trip.

She wont do it here, or at my dad's house either (which is also near me). She says it is too much of a hassle to prepare everything out here.

I think it's a hassle for everyone else to have to drive an hour.

Yeah. I think only like four people would realistically show up... and they would all take the same car. haha.

I just feel weird being like "Hey mom-- don't even worry about it."

I just don't think she understands b/c she has a lot of money so gas prices aren't shit to her.

But-- for people like me and my friends... who don't have money.... they are pretty ridiculous.

Ask her if a friend can throw it, and she can just show up?
If she's the only one who would go to a shower for you in her area, she should be willing to travel.
It's too far to ask friends, who will already be spending money on gifts, to go.

At first she agreed to have it at my dad's house. Then she changed her mind... which, sucks.

I only have a tiny bit over a month until my due date-- So I guess I REALLY need to decide what to do. I'll probably just not have one.

If you have most of the stuff you need... You can do a meet & greet shower.

One of my friends, who's having her 3rd, is doing that.

Rather than a shower before, she's having everyone just bring something like diapers to the house, after her and her new baby come home.

She won't need most of the big stuff, because of all the hand-me-downs.
Maybe something like that would be better?

It's really up to you, but if it were me, I'd put my foot down and say she has to go to you, or deal with not being a part of it.

...My mom is a first-time grandma and would totally cave and just take the trip so she wouldn't miss anything.

My mom would definitely come out here if it was out here, but she wanted to throw it. No one else has volunteered to.

Another question-- at baby showers do most people give clothes? b/c every time I turn around someone is giving me newborn baby clothes. I have so many newborn baby clothes you would think she is going to be that tiny forever.

The meet & greet thing is a really good idea.
