Since the question can in no way every be truly objective - I'm going to say, no. Each family's size is perfect for that family - their children are blessings. Would you go and tell someone their family is "too small"?

I'm going to be having our 5th kid - my 3rd, but my husband's 5th. I lost a baby in March, so this would have been #6 otherwise. My father-in-law told my husband, after we announced the pregnancy that was lost, told him that he should have gotten himself fixed - implying that we have too many kids. Why should I be limited to only the 2 I already have, just because he had 2 before we met? Out family size is no one else's business. And we do plan to have more kids after this one, too. We have known since before we got married that we wanted a large family.

Siblings helping to raise younger siblings - as in keeping an eye on them and keeping them out of danger, lending a hand when Mom's arms are full, respectfully reminding them of family rules, etc. - really isn't an issue to me. How many years has it been since wealthy families hired women to raise their children for them? Wait - we're still doing it now, and it's not just the wealthy families. Yeah, those parents still love their children and want good things for them, but they are requesting help of someone else. Anyone utilize daycare while they are at work? Family members? Public school? I sure do. These places raise your children in the time that you aren't with them - and quite often one or more of those is necessary. Having siblings help out in the family doesn't mean that that is ALL they are doing.

Quoting Eva's Step-Mom:“ yes, and look how many women have died giving birth to multiple children. Thats actually why Margret ... [snip!] ... until she finally died giving birth. I know we have better medical care now, but its still to much strain on a womans body.”

You forget to calculate in the living conditions of those times - with a cleaner environment as we have these days, far fewer women die from births that haven't been meddled with medically. I honestly do not believe these women died through childbirth alone. When you state facts about a person, make sure you include pertinant information. A la Wikipedia:
"Sanger was born in Corning, New York. Her mother, Anne Purcell Higgins, was a devout Roman Catholic who went through 18 pregnancies (with 11 live births)[1] before dying of tuberculosis and cervical cancer.
TB and cervical cancer were the cause of her death - not childbirth.

BTW, Margret Sanger also went on a crusade to reduce the minority populations - through strategic placement of birth control centers in minority areas. It's called negative eugenics or pseudo-eugenics - along the same thought lines as required sterilization.

Thanks for posting this I was going to make some comment but you did it much nicer. Margret Sanger was a racist who wanted to eliminate minorities because they were "undesirable".... personally I think she is rotting in hell, but thats just me.

As for large families... love them! I have 3 living, 1 step and 4 mc's.... I would love more!

I didn't read the article but I have read about the Duggars. The only problem I have with it is she says she practices child-led weaning but she quits nursing when her kids are around 6 months or so, in order to become pregnant again. Other than that, I think they should have as many kids as they're able to care for.

Somehow, doesn't quite strike me as child-led weaning! Interesting tidbit, I had never read that before.

I'd rather see a family of 16 that can take care of them, love them, and trach them to be productive members of society than some families out there that have three or four children with as many different fathers and the neighbors raise them. I know that's harsh and I'm sure I'll hear about it, but I used to work in social services and there are many women who had babies to get benefits. Social services has a place and it frustrates me when women abuse it and don't give to the kids the love they need.

Personally, I couldn't have a dozen kids...I would go crazy, but some people can and are great at it. To each, their own.

I have to agree. Like I said, the only problem I have with the Duggars is that they claim to use child led weaning and they don't. Other than that, they take care of their family and don't rely on the government. I used to live down the street from a girl who kept having babies just to get welfare. She had her 1st with the 1st guy, then she went to the 2nd guy and had a baby with him, then she went back to the 1st guy and had another baby with him and then back to the 2nd guy and finally onto a 3rd guy. It was horrid, her house was nasty and her kids were always dirty.
