White spots on teeth??

posted 25th Aug
My son got white chalky looking spots on the bottom of his top front teethshortly after they came in, around 5 months or so. The doc is not concerned and said there is no reason to see the dentist about it. So I talked to the dentist anyway   and he said that because I was using boiled/bottled/distilled water for his formula, he's not being exposed to flouride, so that's not the problem. He said it was probably because of my calcium intake during pregnancy.

Has anyone else heard of/had this? And for parents with older kids with this problem, how did the adult teeth come in? Were there still white spots?

My brother and I had the opposite problem with too much flouride and we ended up with spots on our adult teeth. My teeth are hard as rocks and I've never had a cavity, but they're cloudy (I had my 2 front ones covered, my brother had 4).

They actually say that society as a whole has deteriorating tooth health (if you could call it that) because they're all drinking bottled water which does not contain flouride.

It's a delicate balance.

So, if he does end up having these marks on his premanent teeth, can they do anything to get rid of it? When you say you had them covered? What is that extactly?

I hate to be paranoid - cause he's going to get his adult teeth so soon now lol! I just have a thing with teeth... I can't handle when they look funny.

I drank a lot of water when I was pregnant, I wonder if I had to much flouride and that's what's caused it. He's never had actually straight tap water, and we use the kids non flouride toothpaste, so I know it's not him ingesting it.

There isn't a procedure that will take the spots out and leave his natural teeth. I had "bonds" put on the front (this was before the days of vineers (sp?))...which means they literally covered them up with a tooth colored substance. I've had the bonds on for 13 years (only supposed to last 8-10), but am looking at having them replaced sometime because my teeth weren't completely in when they were put on. They're very expensive to have done.

Honestly, I look back now and kind of wish I never would have had them put on. My teeth weren't THAT bad (sometimes they can be...) and now I can never go back to my natural teeth because of the process they used to put the bonds on.

Thanks! That is very good info to know. I have a friend whose teeth have dark brown rust like stains - they said from copper in the well water or something - anyway, I know how much it has bothered her, and I wouldn't want him to go through that kind of thing. On the other hand - if its a permenant thing, then I don't know if I would want him to have it done! Geez... he's not even one - I need to find something else to worry about

I definately wouldn't worry until he got his adult teeth...baby teeth don't need a big investment like that ($1,000 each for me to get mine fixed) if they're just going to fall out in a few years.

Feel free to PM me anytime if you have any other questions

I had those white spots on my teeth and I was told it was because of some type of antibiotics. Then again, my dentist also told me they were the same thing as those white spots you sometimes get on your nails and supposedly those are calcium deposits. I had them covered (they were on my adult teeth) years ago - first fisher seals (I think that's what they were called) and more recently veneers (because fisher seals are not permanent). Hope that helps.
