How clear does your 3 year old talk?

posted 25th Aug
My son turned 3 in June and he just recently started preschool. He's in a classroom with only 3 year olds and I've noticed a lot of them talk a lot clearer than he does. I'm sure he's one of the youngest in his class so I'm wondering if his speech will clear up a lot this year or if I should have him seen by a speech pathologist. Don't get my wrong, I have no problem understanding him but it's just not as clear as the other kids.

My daughter is going to be 3 in November and she speaks well. She talks just like one of us, but every child is different.

my 2 year old speaks extremely clearly - she has since about 18 months - every child does things at their own pace as long as your family can understand 70% of what he says at this point I wouldn'tworry .

Don't worry about his speech.. he is obviously working on some other milestone at the moment.. that will surprise you later! And I wouldn't recommend a speech pathologist.. Just talk to your son and have regualar convo's with him.. he'll get better before you know it!

he's fine as long as he is talking. i have a friend that his 3 year old doesnt talk at all. not even mommie or daddy!. she refuse to take him to a speech pathologist. it seems that he cant hear well because everytime someone talks to him he just stared at them.. lol.. i was his baby sitter and i was worried about him.. i ask him if i wanted food, and he just followed me into the kitchen but never spoke!.

He should start talking clearly since he is around other kids that will talk clearly. My daughter at three had a very large and clear vocabulary but she had been around my sister who thinks she is a teacher and refused to talk to her in anyway but scientific terms (lol)

Maybe you should ask the teacher since thats all that they deal with is kids. My friend didn't believe her son had a problem because she could understand him but no one else could! I still can't and he is turning six this week!! She took him into speach therapy and she claims that it didn't work but I think it's they don't have the money to take him! I haveanother friend who nannys for a boy who is really smart but he will be 4 in nov and he still can't really talk! It really frustrates him but his mom is either to lazy or in denial. I would say wait a couple months and if it is still bothering you take him in for an eval. I think the last thing a kid needs is something else to be made fun of. Thats what I worry about my bff's kid because he starts kindegarten this year! Odds are though he's fine! Good luck! Theres also things you can look up to do with him at home! Google it!

Thanks so much for your replies. I think I'll just see how he does the next few months. Like I said he talks nonstop and most of it is understandable it's just not as clear and concise as some of the other kids in his class. Hopefully it'll clear up though. I will definitely ask his teacher what she thinks since she has a lot of experience with 3 year olds. Thanks again!

My oldest talked freakishly well. I just expected my second son to do the same....haha, he did not! But he is a lot more advanced physically. My SIL and my sister's kids seem to be the same at the preschool age, some were more verbal and others were more physical, then they seemed to even out. I wouldn't worry, he'll catch up.

my son is in daycare w/all 3 year olds. He speaks very clearly and in full sentances. His teacher's name is Miss Melva and she says he's the only kid in the entire class that can say her name. alot of the kids in his class still almost mumbler their words or they use baby talk. My son has a problem w/ L's he can't say them but, other than that he speaks very very clearly.

That makes me feel a lot better! I probably just keep hearing the more fluent talkers when I drop him off and pick him up. I paid more attention today and I noticed the kids that I heard spoke well but there were lots more kids that weren't really talking.

every kid is different. Elliot started talking really early and has always tested high in his milestone tests through his ped. His class does unofficial tests and he's tested high there as well. I'm not suprised he's the only one who can say her name. However, just because your son isn't speaking well now, doesn't mean there is anything wrong w/him. It just means he's busy developing something else and is too distracted to bother w/speach. IF you are truely worried, i'd talk to your pedi.

my son is three and most people have a heard time understanding him, I can most of the time but sometimes it's just him not knowing the right word. I wouldn't worry to much he's probably just slower then some of the other kids. Alex didn't really start talking until he turned 3 then it was like bam he knew words but he's working on the talkin in a clear voice now.

My sons been in speach since he was two months old. If your son is talking great, he is going to be around other kids but are there letter combinations that he cannot say like 'SP' 'ST' 'CL' the L sound. If not, sit with him and show him the part if the tongue and where it should touch. Correct him when he pronounces a worl wrong but he is only three and a boy, some sounds don't evolve till 5.
