Parents allowing animal cruelty.....

posted 24th Aug
Today I was over a friend of a friends house when something really started to bother me... This little boy about 2 years old kept picking up his cat, throwing it, grabbing his tail, and ripping out chunks of hair! The mother did nothing. I asked her if she thought he might be hurting the cat. And her response was "When he scratches him, he wont do it anymore." Seriously? Just let him abuse the animal and then get attacked and thats an okay way to learn? I rolled my eyes and walked away.Later I seen the little boy kick the cat! The cat was frightened and kept hissing at him and because of this he got mad and just kicked it! This made me sooo mad! I love my cats, I would never let anyone do that to them.People shouldn't have animals if they don't care about them. And you should definetly not let your kids harm them for fun!

OMG I would have to slap the mother, rip out chunks of her hair and throw her against the wall and say how does that feel?. I love animals and cant stand to see any animal being abused in any way. I think animals are people with fur...hmmm actually animals are better then most people. They dont shoot each other, lie rape steal. All they want is love and they love you unconditional.

There are a couple of chicks on this site who don't think it is animal cruelty
All research shows kids who abuse animals are more likely to abuse people when they're older. Breaks your heart. I don't think I could of stayed there either.

A 2 year doesn't understand he is hurting the cat, the mother should say something to him, however, maybe she has several times before and he just didn't listen. So she waits for the cat to scratch him so he learns his leason.

That, of course, won't go over well if the cat get's him across the face......

I fully agree, I just keep thinking about that horror movie, about the serial killer who killed cats as a child. Seriously, I'm not sure what I'd do if my child was abusing my animals, obviously I'd try and teach them not to. But I feel like your just as responsible for your animals as you are for your kids. You took in the responsibility when you adopted/bought/bread the animals, just like you did when you got pregnant. (Not that the cat is more important, just that it's more of a complicated situation then "sell the cat"

That makes me sad! Parents definitely need to teach their children compassion and respect for all living things. The child may not have been intentionally hurting the cat, but mom should have stepped in and corrected the behavior so maybe he could begin to understand that what he was doing wasn't kind!

I completely agree! Kids are hurtful to animals and then the animals turn on them, and people wonder why! I think that a parent who excuses this type of behavior will also excuse violent behavior latter on in life...you know the ones who say "boys will be boys"(hate those people)

My son was this way with are new cat. I had to give the cat away because he wouldn't listen to me. It'sso sad  My son was about to be 2yrs old at the time. But I figure I'll just wait till he's old enough to understand to get a new pet.

Yeah, I agree with you - - most days I like animals more than I do people.

I wonder if there's any way you could "accidently" leave her some literature about children who kill animals are likely to hurt people later in life. Yeah, I know, he's 2 and he doesn't know any better but he never will if his mom doesn't tell him it's wrong. Waiting for him to get scratched is ridiculous. Will she also let him touch the stove until he just burns himself? Probalby not.

This is the kind of parent that then turns around and dumps their cat because it attacked their child. Same with dogs. They don't teach their kids how to respect animals and their space and then one day, Fido decides to fight back. That's the end of Fido. Or Fluffy. Idiots.

Yep. I must say though, I am stressed about puss and bub meeting. I am worried about the extra effort I'll have to put in superviseing the kitty with bub but I love my cat and she's a member of the family. Adopting a pet is for life. People needs to take it seriously. It won't be easy but there is no way in hell I'll be taking the easy, lazy way out and getting rid of the cat. There are other alternatives!
